Episode 22: Shola & Bidemi
Shola’s POV
I don’t remember how many drinks I had.
Three?
Five?
Maybe more.
At some point, I stopped counting.
The bar had become blurry around me, and my thoughts were even worse.
The children.
The picture.
Ethan.
Eliana.
Episode 21: Shola & Bidemi
Bidemi’s POV
The moment I got home, I called Dare.
“Dare?”
“Yes, Zee.”
“I won’t be coming to the office today again.”
There was a brief pause.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
I lied.
“I just need some time alone.”
“Of course.”
He had loved me.
I wiped my tears.
Then I looked toward the hallway.
Toward my bedroom.
Toward Shola.
For five years, I had run from him.
Maybe this time…
I would stay.
Dare had every reason to be angry.
He had loved me.
He had stayed.
He had helped me build a life when I had nothing.
Yet somehow, even with his heart breaking, he had still chosen my happiness over his own.
I wiped my tears.
Dare had every reason to be angry.
“Deal.”
He opened the door.
Then stopped.
“Zee?”
“Hmm?”
He looked at me for a long moment.
“Don’t run this time.”
My smile faded.
He gave me one last smile.
“Let yourself be happy.”
Then he walked out.
The door closed behind him.
I stood there quietly.
He shook his head.
“I need to meet him properly.”
I laughed.
“You’re unbelievable.”
“I’m serious.”
He pointed toward the hallway.
“You still owe us an introduction. Me, Imade, the kids’ godfather, everybody.”
He paused.
“And preferably when he’s sober.”
I laughed again.
He reached for the door.
“Besides, you still have to introduce us properly.”
I frowned.
“Introduce you?”
“Yes.”
He chuckled.
“This man is apparently the love of your life, the father of your children, and the reason you almost destroyed yourself for five years.”
My smile disappeared.
“I need some distance.”
I nodded slowly.
“I understand.”
“I’ll have Imade take over for me for a while so I can finally return to work.”
“You don’t have to leave because of me.”
“I know.”
He smiled.
“But I think it’s better for everyone.”
“So if you finally have the opportunity to fix things, don’t let fear ruin it again.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“Dare…”
He smiled.
“Choose what makes you happy.”
I wiped my cheek.
“Thank you.”
He nodded.
“But I can’t stay here and pretend this doesn’t hurt.”
“You’re really okay with this?”
“No.”
I laughed through my tears.
He smiled.
“I’m trying to be.”
He looked toward the hallway again.
“And from everything you’ve told me tonight, that man has suffered enough. You both have.”
He looked back at me.
“You’re not?”
“I’m jealous as hell.”
I laughed softly through my tears.
“But I’m not angry.”
He shook his head.
“You deserve to be happy, Zee. If that man is the person who makes you happy, then I want you to give that a chance.”
I stared at him.
“I’m not going to stand here and compete with a man you have loved for years. And I definitely can’t stay around and watch another man claim the woman I want.”
My heart broke for him.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
“I know.”
He stepped closer.
“And I’m not angry with you.”
“You love him.”
It wasn’t a question.
“Yes.”
The answer came immediately.
Dare nodded slowly.
“Then I guess my time is up here.”
My eyes widened.
“Dare…”
“I’m serious.”
He gave me a sad smile.
“I know.”
He raised his hand gently.
“Let me finish.”
I nodded.
He took a deep breath.
“But tonight, I saw the way you looked at him. The way you fought me for him which has never happened before.”
He glanced toward my bedroom.
“And I finally understand.”
I swallowed.
“I’ve spent years watching you build your life. Watching you raise those children. Watching you become the woman you are today.”
His smile faded.
“And somewhere along the way, I started hoping that maybe one day, you’d look at me differently.”
My heart tightened.
“Dare…”
He chuckled softly.
I told him everything about how Shola had suffered when I left thinking he wouldn’t remember me. I made him realize Shola deserves all the love and affection he can get and I’m not about to give him up.
He was surprisingly reasonable.
“No, Zee.”
He shook his head.
“You don’t owe me an apology for loving someone.”
I looked at him.
He sighed and glanced toward the hallway.
“I’m just jealous.”
I blinked.
“At least I can admit that much.”
A small smile tugged at my lips.
“I figured.”
