43 YEARS AGO TODAY.
On 11 September 1983 Nokuthula Simelane, 23, was abducted at the Carlton Centre.
She left home as a student, full of promises and she never came back.
Today is not just an anniversary of pain, it’s a reminder that enforced disappearance is unfinished. No family should live 43 years without answers.
We remember her.

Today would have been Nokuthula’s 67th birthday. 🕯️
Born 5 September 1959 — a daughter, a sister, a student, a courier for freedom who was only 23 when she was taken.
She never got to graduate. She never got to turn 24. And 42 years later, her family still has no grave to visit.
But today, we don’t mourn only what was stolen. We celebrate that she lived. Fierce, purposeful, and unwilling to surrender to apartheid.
Happy heavenly birthday, Nokuthula. We will keep your name alive.

The South Africa that Nokuthula Simelane fought for – and for which she gave her life – is a nation still in the making.
We have realised much of what she dreamed of. But there is still much to do.
It is what remains undone that makes the Nokuthula Simelane Foundation and this memorial lecture so necessary.
