"We never looked at how many stars a guy had because you have to look at who's giving out the stars..

You have to understand the nuance of the route design and what’s trying to be accomplished to understand why this is a drop.
It’s press man/double bump to a slot set.. most every QB in this league will have the ability to hand signal or audible to this exact concept when you get double bump to a slot set.
The Jets have it as well and it’s the perfect play.
The objective is to make the slot defender make a decision.. on how to stay with his man.
The outside WR is to set an angle in his route in such a way as create a screen that makes the defender go over the top or fight underneath….
He’ll be wrong no matter what he does.
For the QB and Wr - if the slot defender chases underneath the screen- the WR reads it and keeps a skinny arc to get vertical quickly and the ball would be an over the top more vertical throw.
-if he goes over the top of the screen (as he tries to do here) the Wr reads it and gets width and more arc in his release creating more separation towards the sideline and when the defender goes over the top this tells the QB that throw is a back shoulder type throw to get the ball in the receivers hands quickly and with as much space as possible from that defender. (as it is here)
This is executed 98% to perfection..
I think -yes the throw can be better but mostly exactly what he’s coached to do and the QB is expecting the Wr to get more width based on what is happening with the defender and he can get his eyes around quicker knowing what type of throw is coming.
