Today, the NYDA Executive Chairperson officially launched the “A Million Connected Youth” campaign in Newcastle, marking a bold step towards connecting young people to opportunity through affordable mobile connectivity.

Powered by YoMo South Africa’s first youth-focused Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), the campaign forms part of the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention (PYEI) ecosystem aimed at expanding youth access to economic opportunities.

Launching in May 2026, as South Africa commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the 1976 June Uprising, the campaign is anchored on three key national priorities:

• Honouring the legacy of the Class of 1976

• Reducing the national NEET population by one million youth

• Supporting the Matric Class of 2026 to achieve a record-high pass rate

The NYDA, together with five young South Africans, participated in the Global South Youth Leadership Program Media Youth Training Camp held in China from 11–21 May 2026.

The programme officially commenced on 14 May and provided delegates with an opportunity to engage with China’s rapid technological advancement, innovation ecosystems, and cultural development initiatives.

Participants explored the development and management of some of China’s leading technology companies, visited Robot World to experience the country’s cutting-edge robotics industry and AI applications, and toured the Xiaomi Auto Super Factory, where they learned about smart electric vehicle production and China’s growing new-energy vehicle industry.

The programme also offered valuable insights into grassroots social governance, youth development, and the industrialisation of traditional culture through various thematic sessions and educational exchanges.

This experience strengthened international collaboration, knowledge sharing, and youth leadership while exposing participants to innovative approaches that can contribute towards youth empowerment and development back home.
