Security heightened in Homa Bay as police issue warning ahead of rally
The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a warning to politicians, rally organisers and their supporters ahead of the planned Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay on Sunday, urging them to avoid actions that could lead to violence or disrupt public order.
In a statement issued on Saturday, August 16, the police said anyone found inciting violence, provoking others or engaging in conduct likely to breach the peace would face the law.
The warning comes amid rising tension in parts of Homa Bay, where political activities linked to the planned rally have been accompanied by reports of road blockages and confrontations.
Police also directed officers deployed to political gatherings to remain professional, impartial and restrained.
They were instructed to protect the right to peaceful assembly while ensuring the safety of members of the public and maintaining order.
The NPS said officers must follow established procedures and warned that any personnel found facilitating violence, disorder or unlawful activities would also face disciplinary or legal action.
The warning follows the arrest of 15 suspects along the Kisumu-Kericho Road on August 15. Police said the suspects were found with crude weapons during an operation and were suspected of being involved in plans to cause chaos and disrupt political activities in the region.
Meanwhile, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna arrived in Homa Bay as preparations for the rally continued.
Siaya Governor James Orengo's convoy was also reportedly attacked by armed individuals in Ndhiwa, forcing the convoy to turn back.
Police have since provided security to the Linda Mwananchi convoy as it travels through areas considered insecure.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has dismissed claims of insecurity linked to the rally as unverified political propaganda.
She has maintained that Homa Bay remains peaceful and open to political activities by different groups.
With the rally expected to attract political supporters, the police have called on all parties to exercise restraint and allow the gathering to take place peacefully.
