Give to Lincoln Day is live! Our biggest fundraising campaign of the year is underway, and your contribution can make a lasting impact. Our mission is to keep the Unicameral nonpartisan through research, education, and public outreach on Nebraska's unique one house legislature.
Voters choose based on the individual, not a party ticket. Senators organize around issues rather than party lines. Nebraska's system is designed to keep the focus on debate, transparency, and individual accountability to voters.
We think it should stay that way.
What does it mean that Nebraska's Unicameral is nonpartisan?
We are the only state in the US with one legislative chamber instead of two. All 49 senators serve in the same body, debating and voting together in the same room. (📷 : Nebraska Unicameral Information Office)
The rules reflect that nonpartisan design. There are no formal party caucuses controlling committee assignments, no partisan leadership directing votes, and no “conference committees” between two chambers. Committee chairs are elected by the full body by secret ballot.
Who was George Norris? Throughout the United States, Norris is known as the architect of the Tennessee Valley Authority, the author of the 20th Amendment to the US Constitution, and one of the greatest US senators ever to serve.
“That your work may be successful and it may receive the approval of all honest-minded citizens is not only my personal wish, but I believe it is the hope and desire of a great majority of the local citizens of Nebraska. [Thank you, Mr. President.]”
