Go read the terminals. Nowhere in there does it call Forerunners: aliens or a separate species. The only thing that would imply that is the librarian's discovery of earth. But even then, the librarian refers to earth as "Eden". Which implies that Earth is their (forerunner) origin. It's why she's so fascinated with the planet and it's beings. While the terminals themselves may muddy up the human forerunner connection, they don't out right contradict it.

If I were Activision and I wanted to test the waters with Halo I'd do an ODST game in the COD engine made by the team who made Infinite Warfare. Keep it to boots on the ground stakes during a part of the Covenant war. No mentions of 343 retcons.
