Start with a Meal

Sama is a 27-year-old widow from Gaza who has been raising her daughter, Rose, alone since her husband was martyred in the first months of the genocide while she was pregnant. Now two years and three months old, Rose has never met her father and is currently suffering from malnutrition. After being displaced seven times, the family now rents a small one-room apartment with a combined kitchen and bathroom for about $230 a month. Sama lives there with Rose, her parents, and her younger brother, who has been unable to start university because the family cannot afford the fees. Her father was seriously injured in the siege, sustaining shrapnel wounds to his head and body that leave him unable to walk without assistance. He also relies on an oxygen machine, with medication costing around $170 each month and battery charging costing another $10 a day. The family has accumulated about $2,000 in debt, has no employment or regular income, and survives only through donations. They have not received soup kitchen meals for two years, and their area has no free water distribution or regular aid packages, making it increasingly difficult to cover food, medical care, and Rose's basic needs.
