Trump gathered children in the Oval Office to sign a fitness award. Then he told them they'd be dead if it weren't for him.

Tuesday afternoon, May 5. The President invited a group of elementary school students into the Oval Office to ceremonially sign a memo restoring the Presidential Fitness Test. Around him: Gary Player, Bryson DeChambeau, Noah Syndergaard, RFK Jr., Linda McMahon, Pete Hegseth. The kids were there for a photo op about pull-ups and sit-ups.

Trump pivoted within minutes.

"We would have had an Iran with a nuclear weapon, and maybe we wouldn't all be here right now," he told the room, gesturing to the children. "The Middle East would have been gone. Israel would have been gone. And they would have trained their sights on Europe, first, and then us."

A reporter asked whether Iranian protesters could topple their government if armed by the US.

With a child standing directly next to him, Trump answered by describing a sniper massacre. "They don't have any guns. You can have 200,000 people protesting and have five or six sick people with guns, and when they start shooting them right between the eyes, and you see a guy fall, and another one fall. They killed 42,000 people last month. 42,000 unarmed protesters."

Then he reached back to 2022 to describe the killing of Mahsa Amini. "And then, suddenly, a woman dropped dead with a bullet right there. Always right there." He pointed to the space between his eyes.

The children were visibly bored. Some looked confused. The AP photo shows them standing in a row, watching the president describe public execution.

He was not done. He launched into a rant about transgender athletes. "I've never had one person say it's important we allow women to be challenged by men in women's sports. I've been president for five years."

The lesson the children took home was that the President of the United States cannot get through five minutes in front of a room of children without describing massacres or being a bigot. That is a different kind of fitness test. He failed it.
