"Mo Chara’s real problem is that the message he put out landed. Working-class people aren’t meant to speak like this, organise like this, or connect struggles across borders like this. That’s what scares them.
While Mo Chara stands in the dock for allegedly waving a flag, those complicit in a genocide walk the streets untouched. Since October 2023, over 60,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza – entire families erased, journalists targeted, children bombed in their beds.
More than 300 officials at the Foreign Office raised their concerns about Israel’s “stark … disregard for international law”. And yet, the UK government continues to greenlight arms deals and offer diplomatic cover. That’s not a performance. That’s a conscious policy decision. Made in Westminster, paid for by the taxpayer, and buried beneath silence.
They’ve tried this before. Give Ireland Back to the Irish – banned. Christy Moore – detained. The Pogues’ Streets of Sorrow – silenced for decades. And now, it seems to be Mo Chara – for turning protest into poetry, politics into art.
So here’s the question – the same one Pete Seeger asked, the same one Mo Chara asks now: Which side are you on?

APPLICATION FOR JUDICIAL REVIEW AGAINST DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMY AND INVEST NI FUNDING WHICH MAY BE LINKED TO ISRAELI F-35 FIGHTER JETS
Today we lodged Judicial Review proceedings at the High Court in Belfast to challenge funding provided by the Department of Economy and Invest NI to companies directly involved in the supply chain of components and/or equipment for F-35 fighter jets which could be used by Israel in Gaza. This is despite the UK Government accepting that there is a real risk that Israel might commit a serious violation of international humanitarian law, including through the use of F-35 fighter jets.
Michael Madden, of Madden & Finucane Solicitors, today said:
“Information obtained by our client raises serious concern that public funds may have been used to create parts for F-35 fighter jets which have been used to drop bombs in Gaza. This is upon the backdrop of the current UK rules which demand an immediate halt of all export licences for weapons to Israel. Our client seeks the court’s protection and scrutiny to stop any more public funds being used to create components or equipment that could be used by Israel to kill and injure civilians in Palestine.”
Our client, who is a member of Cairde Palestine, today said:
“We cannot stand by while Israel continues to bomb and starve Palestinians. Invest NI is actively funding companies that may be contributing to the Israeli genocide. Through this legal action we hope to make the public aware of the extent to which taxpayer money may be funding the genocide and other war crimes committed by Israel. As a group, we stand against all forms of local collusion with the Israeli war machine.”
