The Spanish Empire tended to avoid the word "colony".

The territories that were claimed by the conquistadors were mostly organised as viceroyalties, e.g. the Viceroyalty of New Spain or the Viceroyalty of Peru.

Each one was ruled by viceroy who served on behalf of the king directly.

So these territories were, in a strictly legal sense, part of the Kingdom of Spain and not separate colonies.

This meant that the native inhabitants were subjects of the king with the same rights as people in Spain itself.

Did this mean they were treated well?

Often not. The encomienda system could be quite cruel.

But the legal basis for equal rights was there.
