We are seeing a disgusting, cowardly terrifying wave of hate, vitriol and violence directed at LGBTQ people across the country and here in California.

Republicans leaders at every level have decided that they're going to make hatred against LGBTQ people, especially trans children, a central part of their political platform and strategy. They're encouraging it and stoking it, while passing laws to strip people of their rights. It's being widely elevated and promoted including on this platform, and leading to real acts of violence and terror.

Seeing the majority of the California Assembly Republicans get up and walk out in the middle of our annual PRIDE celebration was one of the more despicable things I've seen since I've been in elected office. One member even photoshopped other legislators using a photo taken by the official state photographer to use in this political stunt.

That type of homophobia must be roundly condemned, confronted and those who engage in it should face repercussions for their behavior. Homophobic officials who blatantly violate the rules of the Assembly should not be in positions of leadership.

As allies, we must stand steadfast with the LGBTQ community, move with urgency and purpose to pass laws to protect these rights, and protect our LGBTQ siblings in every way we can. We are not going backwards.
