18th August 1979, Ray Wilkins made his league debut in the 1-1 draw with Southampton at the Dell. 21,768 were there to also see David Peach score from the Spot for the Saints, whilst Big Gordon McQueen equalised for United. Ray went on to play 194 games for the reds scoring 10 goals. 🇾🇪 Our Rolls Royce defender, the legendary Martin Buchan

If footballers were cars, Buchan was a Rolls-Royce, never mind that he actually drove a Triumph Dolomite!

His discipline and intelligence were remarkable. In 18 years as a professional, Buchan was booked just five times and never sent off. "I was only booked five times in 18 years and I was never sent off," he reflected years later. "It's partly the way I was brought up." His mum made sure of that ringing him from Aberdeen whenever he got a yellow card, asking what he'd been up to "as if I'd brought shame on the family."

When Leeds defender Terry Yorath once said, "I worry about him when the going gets tough," Buchan sent him a postcard from the 1978 World Cup: "Dear Terry, greetings from my second World Cup. Hope the going doesn't get too tough. Yours in sport, Martin."

Martin Buchan. A legend in every sense of the word. And best of all, he was a Red.
