🕹️New Paper Out on #nostalgia!
Nostalgia is not always about loss. Video game nostalgia GENERATES things for the present and the future -- we are not just dwelling in the past and playing with loss.
I draw on #Clubpenguin, #Minecraft, & #ROBLOX

Dr. @el_insalvable: ROJO uses Francoist objects of nostalgia, but online forums still debate its neofrancoist or left wing propaganda stance.
We don’t just play a past to understand it, the past also plays with us in how we make presumptions about it even w/o having played it!
It has been a joy putting this together, having learnt the new ways to reflect on a past (our panels) or reuse it materially (research creationists).
Nostalgia is just so, so generative!
Time's Up!
We want to thank EVERYONE who made possible "Time in a Bottle 2024": presenters, research creationists, the @cu4thspace, @Milieux_news, the Concordia Council on Student Life, and @TAG_News.

See you next year!
Thank you so much for your dynamic panel on nostalgic disjuncture and podcast with the wonderful Andrei Zanescu!
New junctures — friendships, ideas, and meaning — were made today :)
We can’t wait to have you back!
Had a great time at @Nostagain Symposium today. Thanks to all the organizers, presenters, the audience, and the wonderful crew of the 4th space for being such rad folks. More of this in life. I'm already nostalgic for today. <3.
Dr. Morgan Bimm concludes by saying “we’ve always borrowed from the past”—
how we choose to use it as a way to divert or repeat the past is generative.
For ex, an insta page that says #Airpods are “functional and forced on us by Apple” but they are “not cool”. Being wired is.
Dr. Morgan Bimm says the iPod is a #boundaryobject that conjoins, converges, and diverges time.
It gets its users to interact with the old, the now, and the new.
Social historic groups relay their past through new mediums: publishing old songs for us to hear and return to.
Dr. Morgan Bimm closes our last panel from St. Francis Xavier University with the #iPod.
How has this object of nostalgia evolved to become the nostalgic objective we all yearn to get back to?
To scroll through music by the wheel like in the past— not swiping screens today
Dr. Diego Mejía-Alandia from the University of Seville talks about how Soviet nostalgia and the Soviet nostalgia for #Space allows for us to (re)play #nostalgia in relation to post-communism.
What objects for nostalgia capture Tamil culture? Conversely, what about Tamil culture captures our nostalgia?
Identifying this is key to creating nostalgic game experiences but also games that allow one to play with nostalgia.
- Shashvat Singh and colleagues.
Opening the last panel COMFORT & COMPLICATION with how the cooking game, Venba, can evoke #Tamil culture.
Presented by Shashvat Singh, Hariharan S., Siddharth Rawat, Vaishakh Marar, and Adil Jacob.
Kelly Day’s research creation of FAIRYTALE, A TRUE STORY 2023.
Each page is a layer of skin, tissue, fat, muscle, etc. to have a deep dive into the stressful past that this story embodies and tells. Piece by piece.
