Last Thursday, I arrived early for my son’s swimming lesson and found him sitting alone beside the pool.

His towel was dry. So was his hair.

The other children were in the water.

I’d paid $240 for six beginner lessons. Before the first one, he’d worn his goggles around the house and asked whether we could leave early.

By the third, he was telling me his stomach hurt.

I thought he was nervous. I told him learning something new takes time.

Now he was sitting on a bench, watching everyone else take turns with a kickboard.

When he saw me, he immediately stood up.

“Can we go?”

I asked whether he’d been in the pool.

He shook his head.

The instructor came over and said my son was still building confidence. Watching other children was part of that process.

Then he mentioned the private “confidence package” he’d offered after the first lesson.

Three extra sessions. Another $150.

I’d declined because we’d barely started the lessons I’d already bought.

I asked whether my son had refused to get into the water.

The instructor said some children needed additional preparation.

My son pulled at my sleeve.
