Eat a pound of beef a day, every day for a year, and one animal dies. One bullock, two years out on grass, a bolt to the forehead and gone before the sound reaches him.
Eat a pound of pork a day for a year and 3 pigs die. Most go down a lift into a pit of carbon dioxide. It burns the nose and throat, they fight to climb out, and it takes the best part of a minute to put them under.
Eat a pound of lamb a day for a year and 8 lambs die. Stunned, cut, done inside a second.
Eat a pound of salmon a day for a year and 55 fish die, plus the sardines they were fed. The lucky ones are clubbed. The rest have the gills cut while awake, or are gassed, and fight it for up to nine minutes.
Eat a pound of chicken a day for a year and 75 birds die. Hung upside down by the legs on a moving line, dragged head first through an electrified bath, then the blade. Some arch their necks, miss the water, and meet the blade awake.
Eat a pound of prawns a day for a year and 15,000 die. In the trawl they are crushed and left to asphyxiate on the deck. In the farm, their mother has her eyestalk cut off to make her lay.
Eat a pound of bread a day for a year and nobody can give you a number. Field mice, voles and nesting birds go through the combine in July. In Germany alone the mowers cut around 90,000 roe deer fawns in half every May. Round the grain store the rats take the poison and bleed to death inside for a week.
Eat a pound of rice a day for a year and the paddy is flooded, drained and sprayed, and everything in the water goes with it. Frogs, fish, snakes, the lot. Then the stubble is burned.
The bullock had a number on an ear tag and a man who checked on him every morning.
The field mouse had a combine.
The only animal on the list that was looked in the eye before it died is the one you have been told to feel guilty about.
University debate: "The most vegan meal on earth is a grass-fed steak."
Vegan: "I'm sorry, I've read the motion three times. Is it a misprint?"
Anthropologist: "No."
Vegan: "You're going to stand in front of four hundred people and tell them a steak is vegan."
Anthropologist: "The most vegan. I'd like credit for the full claim."
Vegan: "It's a dead cow."
Anthropologist: "One. What did you have for lunch?"
Vegan: "A lentil and rice bowl. Nothing died for it."
Anthropologist: "It came off a ploughed field. Mice, voles, ground nests, every insect in it, cleared out several times a year by a machine the width of this stage. One bullock feeds a person for twelve months. I'm on one death. You lost count at the starter."
Vegan: "Those are accidents."
Anthropologist: "I'll let the voles know it wasn't personal."
Vegan: "Fine. The planet. Cattle take up enormous amounts of land."
Anthropologist: "Hill, rain and grass. Land no plough can touch. He eats what grew there by itself and nobody has to clear a thing. Your lentils needed the field emptied first."
Vegan: "We could rewild it."
Anthropologist: "With what?"
Vegan: "...Grazing animals."
Anthropologist: "I've brought some."
Vegan: "This is absurd. Humans can get everything they need from plants."
Anthropologist: "There's a lawn outside. Help yourself."
Vegan: "We can't digest grass."
Anthropologist: "He can. Four stomachs and a vat of bacteria. He's the only system on earth that gets everything out of a plant, and he hands it over as protein, iron and the B12 you're taking as a tablet."
Vegan: "So your argument is that the cow is vegan."
Anthropologist: "Strictly. Never touched meat in his life. I'm simply eating a plant-based diet that's been finished properly."
Vegan: "You cannot call that vegan."
Anthropologist: "Fewest deaths, no plough, no supplements. If you've a better word for what you were after, I'll use it."
Moderator: "Time."
Vegan: "I'd like the motion read out again."
Moderator: "It's still not a misprint."
@liberscravola Boomers ate super cheap fast food.
Back then, that WASN’T eating out, that was going through the drive-thru—no beers, no tipping, no $20 burrito, no dessert, just supersized combo meals for about $5.
And until recently, that was cheap.
Your body is hunting equipment from the skull to the heel, and you have been using it to carry shopping.
Your brain burns a fifth of your energy sitting still. Nothing that expensive gets built on leaves. It was paid for in meat and fat, and it was built to plan a kill.
Your eyes face forward, like every animal that chases and unlike every animal that gets chased.
The whites of them are on show so the hunter beside you can follow your gaze without a word being said.
You have two to four million sweat glands and no fur. You are the best-cooled animal on land.
An antelope cannot pant and gallop at once. You can sweat and jog all afternoon.
You have a ligament running up the back of your neck whose only job is to hold your head steady at a run. No ape has it.
Your shoulder throws at ninety miles an hour. A chimp, far stronger pound for pound, manages twenty.
Your backside is the largest muscle you own, and it hardly switches on until you break into a run.
Your Achilles tendon is a long spring that hands back energy on every stride. A chimp barely has one.
In the Kalahari, men still run a kudu to a standstill in the midday heat. It takes a few hours and the kudu loses.
In mid Wales every June, people race horses over twenty-two miles of hill. People have won it three times.
A brain to plan it, eyes to aim it, a cooling system, a throwing arm and a spring in each heel.
Nobody has ever needed any of that to creep up on a blackberry.
University debate: "Carbs are the body's preferred fuel. Ketosis is the emergency generator."
Dietician: "Give the body carbohydrate and fat together and it burns the carbohydrate first. That's what preferred means."
Anthropologist: "And if I add a whisky?"
Dietician: "It burns the alcohol before anything."
Anthropologist: "So whisky is the body's preferred fuel."
Dietician: "Obviously not. Alcohol goes first because the body can't store it and can't leave it lying around."
Anthropologist: "Good. Hold on to that. How much carbohydrate can you store?"
Dietician: "About 500 grams. Liver and muscle."
Anthropologist: "2,000 calories. One day. And fat?"
Dietician: "It varies."
Anthropologist: "A lean person carries 80,000. Two months. So the body burns first whatever it has least room for. You've just explained that to me using whisky, and then called it a preference when it's bread."
Dietician: "The brain needs glucose. 130 grams a day."
Anthropologist: "On your diet. Offer it ketones and it takes up to two thirds of its energy from them, and the liver makes what's left. How much glucose is in your whole bloodstream at this moment?"
Dietician: "Around 5 grams."
Anthropologist: "A teaspoon. Much more than that damages blood vessels, so the body drops everything to clear it. I've seen bouncers treat people that way. I wouldn't call them preferred."
Dietician: "Ketosis only appears when you're starving. That is an emergency."
Anthropologist: "It appears within a day of the carbohydrate running out, fed or not. Where was the starch in northern Europe in January, for half a million years? You've filed every winter our species ever had under emergency."
Dietician: "Nobody is in ketosis as a normal state."
Anthropologist: "Every newborn is. Within days of birth, on breast milk, with half its calories from fat. The fastest brain growth in nature runs on your back-up system."
Dietician: "Then why do people feel dreadful when they cut carbs?"
Anthropologist: "For about a week. Take a leg out of plaster after forty years and it won't feel marvellous on the stairs either."
Moderator: "Closing statements."
Anthropologist: "The mains runs out by tomorrow lunchtime. The generator has two months in the tank and was switched on at birth. I'd ask which one the house was built around."
Just interviewed a medical doctor that had suffered for 30 years with ulcerative colitis.
Was given pills for decades and told that diet had nothing to do with inflammatory bowel disease.
Eventually she went on a specific carbohydrate diet and then a keto diet and saw improvement
In 2022 she went carnivore, gave up the keto vegetables and finally became completely symptom free and off all medications
I am always amazed at how ridiculous it is for a gastroenterologist to state that diet has zero to do with a gastrointestinal disorder like inflammatory bowel disease. It literally sounds idiotic to believe so. But I guess when you get paid to do 30 endoscopies a week, lifestyle medicine makes zero financial sense.
@WardoftheStates Fuck. That.
End the program.
Pay what’s owed.
Find the money.
End foreign aid and the Dewaynegeld and transfer it to domestic aid.
That’s our message ro government.
@WardoftheStates End the stupid program AND pay off what you owe.
This is the message we should present ro the government.
End foreign aid and transfer is to domestic aid.
@snow_frog8 Hate to be a wake up call but a boomer with a nice house probably paid in more than they will get out.
That is to say, if you’re successful, they take your retirement “investment” and share it with other retirees that didn’t pay in as much.
Hope this helps.
@chicfryrice Very strange system where the government takes money earmarked for retirees and spends it on dumb shit like foreign aid and the Dewaynegeld.
