@gxblinhacker — sake. Just to play it that everything would be alright.
“Gator’s, terrorists, explosions. All of it. I wouldn’t trade it for the world, Grace.”
@gxblinhacker “Want the truth?”
Tires squeal as he draws closer and closer, the gap in her replies making his chest ache with worry.
“They were. I loved them.”
There was a slight crackle in his voice, pain evident with each word spoken yet he’s holding it together for her —
@gxblinhacker — changes and without their favorite hacker around, they had to keep me on payroll.”
There’s chuckle that followed was forced, an act to try to keep himself stable.
“Good ol’ days, huh? Like rescuing you from a derelict apartment building?”
@gxblinhacker Teeth grit at her cough; knuckles turning white as he grips the wheel, lips curling into a frown. Why.
Why did this have to happen.
He was getting closer, but she seemed to be deteriorating faster than he was driving.
“Well, with budget cuts they had to make some —
@gxblinhacker — ought to spend time around us and learn something?”
There’s a taunting prod of a tone in his voice, all in the hopes of keeping her just distracted enough to keep talking.
@gxblinhacker “Yup. Decaf at the office isn’t hitting the same.”
A dry chuckle escapes at the remark; though he’s glancing between his phone and the road, every light seeming to just grace him with access.
“You know what they say, we old folk have plenty of experience. Maybe you —
@gxblinhacker “Fair enough. . . Might raid your office, but I doubt they’ll tear the building down.”
Though with the quiet, dull thump of a car door and the rumble of its engine? He’s driving.
“Especially with Bishop returning to Rainbow.”
Gossip would keep her distracted—
@gxblinhacker “Was pretty good. Just packing up the last of my things from Rainbow’s office.”
Eyes roll. She was overambitious, and it stung that she got into something without him.
Yet he’s on the move.
“What did you do with that gator you had all those years ago?”
@gxblinhacker “. . . What happened?”
He’s not saying he’s on his way.
The last thing he needs is for her to try to discourage him; yet that wince caught his attention, so of course he’s bringing a first aid kit.
“Don’t spare a detail.”
@gxblinhacker Another gut punch.
He had a feeling today was going to be full of them.
“You’ve said that before.”
A brief pause of his own.
“Where are you?”
@gxblinhacker That broke his heart.
He’s known her long enough to know something was up, that something was wrong.
“. . . You know what’s better? Company.”
@gxblinhacker Fishing in his jacket for his keys, he’s waving her to follow. He may as well take her to lunch, especially considering he knows she’s hiding something.
