@Foxytocinn What if there was a developed fan base, but the company wants to go bigger?
So they target a wider audience at the expense of some of their core fans
Now, who is the fanbase? How do you target all of them?
@Stereosin60@DreadDiscourse Ragnarok WAS the third Kratos game. Devs have explained that it was intended to be a trilogy, but they just compressed the last two into one game.
They'd be dumb to not make more Kratos games, but he's a completely different character now.
@GameReviewGuy The people who dislike Laufey probably share space with people who dislike NuGoW.
The series is becoming modernized, as well as transformed to attract a broad audience.
GoW was literally a gamer take on a Greek epic poem.
NuGoW is a Marvel movie.
@CatMan121386@huzzahandshit@onyxicca Just wait, when Halo 10: Mistress Chief's Transspecies Lesbian Polycule comes out they'll tell you that girls love Halo, always loved Halo, and that you should just go back and play Halo 2.
@eclairJoss Lara Croft says hello.
Most people aren't malding over female protagonist, and the ones who are maybe struggling to articulate discomfort with movement of culture away from tradition into change for the sake of:
1. Political Agenda
2. Broad demographics (profit)
3. Change itself
@JEAlexander@WeAreMassEffect He's a councilor - a diplomat/politician. He'd be well off to be versed in other cultural standards and oddities, especially when talking to a human.
It's been ~25 years since the first contact war, so there's plenty of time for human quirks to spread throughout citadel space.
@Vanilleotter@huzzahandshit@onyxicca It's not a good thing from the perspective of the people who feel like a franchise they know and love is moving on without them.
And it's not just one game. Other franchises are doing the same. This is not a new phenomenon.
@Vanilleotter@huzzahandshit@onyxicca NuGoW trends toward close-up, personal storytelling over epic poem/Greek tragedy.
Includes young child.
Violence is dialed way back (Mimir's decapitation vs Helios).
Kratos remorseful of violent past vs. seeking revenge.
These are significant differences.
@huzzahandshit@Vanilleotter@onyxicca That's not what I'm saying, but levers are being pulled to steer appeal and marketing to a more female audience.
I don't know enough about the game from what little we've seen, but NuGoW definitely appeals more to women very bluntly. Happy to break that down.
@huzzahandshit@Vanilleotter@onyxicca Valorant, CoD, Dragon Age, all criticized for modernizing specifically to appeal to broader (female) audiences.
I'd be interested to see the breakdown for DA:O vs Veilguard.
@Vanilleotter@huzzahandshit@onyxicca Because you have to change the game to attract people who aren't interested in it.
This often alienates people who like it as it is.
No. If cozy gamers want to play Halo that's fine. Halo shouldn't become cozy for them and abandon sci-fi shooter fans is all.
@mazyleaves@StayDownFGC Fists.
And honestly, the variety between axe and blades alone was refreshing compared to GoW3, where 3.5/4 weapons were just chain blades with slightly different move sets.
@huzzahandshit@Vanilleotter@onyxicca If you exclude Candy Crush and Stardew Valley, you lose a HUGE portion of female gamers.
That's not to say that female Halo fans don't matter, but we shouldn't be trying to get Stardew girls interested in Halo.
@Vanilleotter@onyxicca Maybe the numbers have changed a bit since 2019, but here:

That's not to say female action players don't matter, but the women that liked halo in 2003 probably wouldn't like it if the genre shifted to mass appeal any more than the male fans of 2003.
