From the very beginning of my artistic journey, the spirit of Kintsugi has guided my canvas. My philosophy is simple: we shouldn't conceal the broken parts, but celebrate them. In this work, the delicate fractures running through the celadon skin are intentionally brought to the surface, embraced by raw ink and gold. Beautiful things are allowed to crack.

학 - Unfolding into Light

Most of this bird is still just ink. The legs, the dark tail - wet brushstrokes standing in a little water. Then the wings open and turn to glass.
This is 학 (hak), the red-crowned crane. In Korea it's the bird of long life and grace - the one painted for a thousand years to wish someone a long, gentle existence.
I gave the phoenix fire and the dragon thunder. The crane just gets to be quiet. Sometimes that's the better blessing. 🤍

부채춤 - Blooming as One

The buchaechum is Korea's fan dance, where each dancer holds a pair of peony fans and, moving together, the whole group opens into a single living flower.
No one fan is the bloom - the bloom is what they make together.
Here the dancers rise from flat ink into dimensional color, fans of glass and silk unfolding in a spiral until many become one great peony.
It is the simplest truth of culture and joy: we are most beautiful when we move as one.

호랑이 - Guardian Stepping Through

In Korean folk culture the tiger is the great guardian - the spirit who drives off misfortune and carries blessings to the household, watched over by the chattering magpie who brings good news.
Here the guardian steps out of an old ink painting: its striped coat turning from flat black brushstroke into luminous celadon, mother-of-pearl, and gold as it crosses into our world.
Fierce yet warm-hearted, it brings the oldest wish of all - that this place, and everyone in it, be kept safe and lucky.

봉황 - Phoenix Rising

The bonghwang, the Korean phoenix, is a creature of renewal, peace, and good fortune.
Here it lifts out of flat sumi-e brushstrokes and becomes dimensional - black ink resolving into iridescent glass, mother-of-pearl, and gold as it climbs.
The empty space around it, yeobaek, is not background but sky: the room a painting needs in order to take flight. It is an image about the moment culture stops being a relic and becomes alive again.

매듭 - The Knot of Connection

The maedeup is the Korean art of decorative knotting, where a single cord is tied - without a single cut - into a symmetrical knot of loops and a flowing tassel.
Each knot is a quiet symbol: two ends becoming one, ties that hold, the bonds between people made visible.
Here the cord begins as a single brushstroke and rises into dimensional silk, the tassel falling back into the ink it came from.
A small thing, patiently made, that says: we are connected.
