On Ref Links
Because of our upcoming launch, we’ve had millions of people engage with our platform and hundreds of thousands sign up. Understandably, there’s been a lot of attention on our project, the majority of it positive, along with some legitimate criticisms of how we’ve implemented certain features.
It’s been publicized that our referral links contain a Base 64 encoded version of the referrer’s email. This system was created at the start of our beta, and its purpose was to allow us to track user referrals by email in order to reward those users, as we announced today. It was a way to attribute sign ups made with a referral link. It was not a way to collect user emails—users already use their emails when they sign up for the platform and get a ref link. We do not use them for anything other than communicating with users and attributing referrals.
At the time the referral links were released, our sign up page always revealed the email of the person who referred you, similar to most referral programs. This was in order to show the invited user that the invite was legitimate.
We should have changed this system after our user base increased exponentially. Going forward, all referral links will contain an encrypted version of the referrer’s email so that it cannot be reverse-engineered. This change is already live.
We aren’t perfect, but we always strive to do the best thing for our users, and we will continue to do so. As our community grows, our hard work and dedication will only increase. We’re in this to make crypto a more transparent and fair place, where normal people have access to tools and information that were previously only available to big institutions. Tomorrow we’ll post an FAQ answering more questions about data privacy and protection.
Our industry has been plagued with bad actors who survive by hiding in the shadows. Crypto intelligence brings them into the light, and that’s what our platform and our research have always done. We are grateful for all of the support and encouragement we’ve received along the way. We will remember that support and continue to reward it.
