My statement on the sentencing of Scientologist Danny Masterson:

"Sitting in court today with the women who survived Danny Masterson's predation was a surreal experience. Over the past seven decades, former Scientologists have sadly become used to Scientology using its financial resources, religious protection, and relationships to snatch justice away from them.

For over two decades, Danny Masterson avoided accountability for his crimes. While Danny was the only one sentenced, his conviction and sentence are indictments against Scientology, its operatives, and its criminal leader, David Miscavige.

Scientology managed to cover up Danny's crimes with the help of its intelligence agency, the Office of Special Affairs, top "church" officials like Kirsten Caetano Pedersen and Julian Swartz, its network of media-hungry unethical attorneys, private investigators, agents, and civilian Scientologists who engaged in a conspiracy to cover up crimes of sexual violence.

I am relieved that this dangerous rapist will be off the streets and unable to violently assault and rape women with the help of Scientology, a multi-billion-dollar criminal organization with tax-exempt status.

Hearing the survivors read their victim impact statements aloud in court while the man who raped them and some of the very Scientologists who terrorized them over two decades were just a few feet away displayed a level of bravery that I am in awe of.

These women not only faced the living hell of being raped, having their rapes covered up by the very organization that promised to protect them, but they have also faced ruthless and criminal harassment by Scientology and its agents since they came forward to law enforcement.

I will always remind the public that in Scientology if you report another Scientologist to law enforcement, you are committing a high crime. The consequences of such a high crime are devastating: you will lose everything you've ever known, from your family to your friends to your job.

The women who survived Danny's predation fought tirelessly for justice. Their tenacity, strength, and courage have given hope to all victims of Scientology that justice is possible. For that, we will forever be grateful.

To the LAPD detectives, the LA District Attorney's office, Judge Olmedo, and the jury, we thank you for your fair and impartial approach to this case and trial."

The African-American studies curriculum has been turned into conservative talking points for political posturing.

Educators are required to teach that George Washington was a “key figure in the quest to end slavery.” 

Let's be clear, Washington never introduced legislation, an executive order, or a handwritten note seeking to abolish slavery. He stated that whipping was “very proper.” He died owning 317 enslaved people.

Educators are also required to teach “but Black people owned slaves too.”

A study by Black historian Carter G. Woodson revealed that census records show the majority of Black owners of enslaved were such from the point of view of philanthropy. The husband purchased the wife, or vice versa … The enslaved of Black people were the children of a free father who had found and purchased his wife back and the children were listed as enslaved on the census.

Moms for Liberty is a far-right hate group that engages in anti-student inclusion activities while purporting to be a modern parental rights movement. Moms for Liberty are the notorious, right-wing zealots who terrorize the nation with their beliefs, their demands, and their dangerous ubiquity.

Moms for Liberty made their national debut in America on the Rush Limbaugh Show.

The GOP LOVES MFL: Of late, this extremist group has exploded in GOP popularity — propelled by opposition to public health regulations for COVID-19. They’re also notorious for opposing LGBTQ+ culture and racially inclusive school curriculum. MFL advocates book bans. Republicans are thrilled with all of the above, of course.

This anti-student inclusion hate group has waged a wicked war against public schools, with watchdog members pouncing to seize hundreds of school board seats across the country.

Moms for Liberty rail against teachers’ unions — condemning them as “terrorist organizations.” The Moms have called for the Department of Education to be crushed and eliminated.

Moms for Liberty’s attacks on the LGBTQ+ community are plentiful and poisonous.

Members of MFL even helped Gov. Ron DeSantis develop Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Moms for Liberty publicly championed the bill.

Moms for Liberty are fangirls of Adolf Hitler, quoting and saluting him on the cover of their June 2023 newsletter.

Purportedly on a mission to protect children, Moms for Liberty pack and attack school board meetings all across America. During the COVID crisis, they decried science and demanded an end to masking in schools and vaccine mandates.

MFL promote book bans, and denounce curricula infused with the critical race theory they deem so deeply offensive. The Moms stand opposed to inclusive curriculum: targeting critical race theory and social emotional learning with particular vitriol.

TIES TO AN INSURRECTIONIST: Trump campaign megadonor Julie Jenkins Fancelli — heiress to the Publix grocery store chain — contributed $50,000 to a Moms for Liberty political action committee. Never forget, Fancelli also donated millions to finance and support the January 6 rallies which lead to the violent storming of the Capitol Complex.

One chapter of Moms for Liberty took issue with a book by Ruby Bridges on the subject of school integration — detailing her experiences. The Moms also protested a book on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., which they bashed as “Anti-American, Anti-White, and Anti-Mexican.” Rather than these books, which they deemed unacceptable, the Moms advocated for books with what they describe as a more positive historical perspective: books that focus on American “heroes” like Clarence Thomas.

Moms for Liberty also recommends books by Birchers: supporters of the John Birch Society.

Moms for Liberty is not an isolated anti-woke, anti-government hate group. The Moms are quite socially active and have strong connections to fellow anti-woke, anti-government hate groups: White nationalists, election deniers, and participants in the January 6th rallies and attacks are all among MFL’s regular contacts.

In fact, Moms for Liberty connect with QAnon, Three Percenters, White nationalist Proud Boys, and more. Moms for Liberty have even been prominently pictured with various Proud Boys, flashing White power signs.
