This poverty fetish has a political reason. I have written about it previously also. A quick summary bears repetition.
Till the mid 50's the coastline was more or less pristine, the first "slum" near the coast were the Burmese refugee camps.
Here the DMK first and later AIADMK found small time thugs, hoodlums to do their dirty work. They were also a captive vote bank.
By the mid 70's slums along the coast had mushroomed everywhere. This was also when the Madras dada period really got going. The DMK (mostly) and AIADMK both found proper hardcore criminals to do their bidding in these slums (Ayodhikupam, Slaterpuram, Dooming kuppam etc) and now a large, captive votebank.
In the 80's the first "regularisation" of these slums took place. Dilapidated tnhb tenements were built to house the residents of these slums and slowly the slums were replaced by these housing blocks. The purpose was the same though.
Kollywood then got in the act. It started glazing the worst of these rowdies (directors like Vetrimaran do that do this day, his next movie is on a run of the mill thug called Mylai Sivakumar who lorded over yet another slum complex near the coast called "Slaterpuram") and creating a very romanticized image of these slums that offer horrible living conditions.
That's why you have cretins like this We Dravidians glazing on poverty porn.
This “we are Gen Z” has become the new “jaantay nahin ho mera baap kaun hai”. The quickest way to erode any Gen Z goodwill is to start using it as a threat at the slightest perceived affront.
Newslaundry claims it received and acted on 4 sexual harassment complaints since 2017. But year after year, their company records state that they have received 0 complaints.
In fact in 2024, it reported that POSH disclosures aren't applicable to them.
In 2024, PM Modi publicly said he was PAINED by the way Sheila Dikshit was "INSULTED" with baseless Corruption allegations.
Today her own son, Sandeep Dikshit, stands on stage with Rahul & mocks the same Prime Minister 💔
> He reduces a diplomatic gesture to a cheap joke by linking the hug to Giorgia Meloni.
Misogynist politics that drags a woman head of Govt into domestic MUDSLINGING for a laugh.
Sandeep Dikshit has remained in Delhi Congress, lost election after election, and still chooses this level of discourse.
Some people can never rise above politics.
Quite a joke and stinks too due to the 12 year delay. Newslaundry should have left the letter as is, in their hall of shame. It would also work as a reminder that it is always a woman, in this case the author of that letter, who refuses to stand by a woman in her fight for justice.
This is a bullshit report from Indian Express though. Before castigating the Government, at least read the report itself. Even the report says that "The credentials of each company are well-established." Not even Indian Express is saying that these companies did not deserve it.
One of the companies listed here is Agnikul Cosmos. This is an Aersopace Startup in a critical sector. They have demonstrated enough reasons to warrant more funding. People should have no issues if the Government is lending them a helping hand.
The same is the case with Ather Energy. Most of the startups mentioned in the list are companies with established credentials in the sector they are in. This happens in literally every country in the world that is serious about developing its sovereign technology.
Anyway, the Government has clarified that no Investment Committee member who participated in approving any proposal had a conflict of interest. Any member connected to an applicant recused themselves fully from evaluation, discussion and voting.
But still, just look at the extent to which USA supports Silicon Valley and Defence Industries. Just take a look at the support Elon Musk and Tesla have got, regardless of which party was in power.
Anyway, Deep Tech is a field where the people with top credentials are naturally limited. You have a limited pool of human resource to choose from. It's natural that the Government will go top minds for assistance in which companies to back. It's also natural that these top minds will have connections to the best performing companies that are worth backing. The only thing the Government can do is ensure that there are sufficient checks and balances to ensure no company is unfairly backed. And the Indian Express report makes it clear that no company was backed unfairly because "The credentials of each company are well-established."
People here will complain that the Government does not sufficiently back domestic R&D. And when the Government actually does that, they will start making such allegations.
It's incredible, really. At least well informed people have a responsibility to be careful when it comes to stuff like this.
Waah what a selective faith in Democracy !
Now, no more ‘vote chori’? The EVMs and the Election Commission seem to have redeemed themselves overnight. #JustAsking
The language we choose reflects our personality and the kind of person we are. Choose your words wisely, because over time, you become what you think, what you speak, and what you practice.
Using bad language is not cool. Abusing is not cool.
Let’s keep the definition of cool simple: being hardworking, kind, respectful towards others and yourself, striving to be successful through honesty, and making your parents and your country proud.
THAT’S COOL.
I’m speaking about this because, over the past few years, the way we perceive abusive language has changed. For many, using such words has become so normal that it’s even considered “cool.” Without realizing it, people casually use degrading and disrespectful language in everyday conversations.
Why are you feeling disrespected now? Just because I asked you to walk the talk, you very clearly mentioned that protestor women should not carry the burden of grace, so if I ask you to display the same level of disgrace that the protestors displayed who you passionately support, then why you feel disrespected? Isn’t it hypocrisy? Preeti ji women like you make word feminist feel shallow and hollow. Speaking in English doesn’t make you wise, your argument and reasoning remains hypocritical and superficial also after slyly attacking me, stop playing a victim now, I do respect women but not those who mislead young and naïve children.
This asshole is comparing the pain of the Kashmiri Hindus to the students. Bhosadike unke saath kya hua tha maalum hai. Itna Samay se problem hai kyonki woh Kashmiri Hindu hai? Saala third rated insaan! Ek kaum ke massacre ka mazaak udaata hai.
Modi-ji appoints Nandan Nilekani, who contested the 2014 elections as a Congress Party candidate, because the government respects his experience leading Infosys and Aadhaar and so many other projects.
Priyanka-ji attacks IIT Madras Director Prof Kamakoti, under whose leadership IIT Madras has emerged as the top tech institution in India and has spawned a vibrant startup ecosystem.
One of them is a classy leader.

Let me tell you why this won't be a success like demand of Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation.
1) This demand is from hardworking students and it's not politically motivated.
If stringent laws could deter people (exam leaks for example) there would be no crime. It’s not the law stupid! It is the criminal justice system and its ability and certainty to punish criminals that can deter crime, if at all. So don’t hold your breath that the anti cheating bill will stop exam leaks
Some facts: about 90% of our revenue comes from outside India, won against tough global competition.
About 2% of our revenue is from the government and when we do business with the government, we always save the taxpayer money, which we have the utmost respect for. We are also among the largest tax payers in our region.
I have never asked for a favor from the government and I never will. When asked for advice, I provide it and I do it independent of political ideology - the Kerala Startup Mission, when the Left Front government was in power, wanted my advice. I told them Keralam has the potential to be a major R&D hub of India. Since then, we have invested in numerous R&D driven statups in Keralam.
In Tamil Nadu, our Chief Minister has made a great new beginning and I am happy to support his effort. It is not because of political ideology but because I want good things to happen in Tamil Nadu.
I love our nation, and I speak my mind. I will not bow down to attacks nor threats. The attacks make us stronger and help us achieve greater success.
