• Burundi, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, DR Congo and Uganda have officially ended outbreaks of poliovirus type 2, following independent assessments conducted between January and June 2026.

• The assessments reviewed disease surveillance, laboratory and epidemiological data, vaccination campaigns and population immunity before confirming that transmission had stopped.

• WHO says vaccination and surveillance were central to the countries’ responses, with laboratory upgrades also improving the region’s ability to detect the virus faster.

• WHO Regional Director for Africa Dr Mohamed Janabi said the milestone requires continued vigilance, strong surveillance and high immunisation coverage to prevent future outbreaks.
