In late 2017, while most people watched Bitcoin prices, one engineer stayed up until 4 a.m. solving a different problem.

That engineer was Anatoly Yakovenko. After years building distributed systems at Qualcomm, he had a simple idea. What if a blockchain could keep its own clock? He called the idea Proof of History. Instead of nodes talking constantly to agree on order, they could prove time had passed using pure cryptography. Transactions could move faster without waiting for constant votes.

He wrote the whitepaper in November 2017. Then he called his old Qualcomm colleagues. Greg Fitzgerald built the first working prototype in early 2018. Stephen Akridge showed how GPUs could check signatures in parallel. Raj Gokal joined to handle the business side. The team first called the project Loom. They later changed it to Solana, after Solana Beach in California where they used to surf before work.

They raised early private funding through 2018 and 2019 while building quietly. On March 16, 2020, the mainnet beta went live. The first block appeared that day. Around the same time a public token auction on CoinList raised about $1.76 million. At genesis, roughly 500 million SOL were created and allocated across the team, early backers, and the Solana Foundation. There is no hard supply cap. New SOL is issued over time, but the rate drops each year and is designed to settle near 1.5 percent long term. Transaction fees are also partly burned.

This is not a sudden success story. It was years of engineering work on speed, parallel processing, and making the network practical for real apps. The team focused on building during the quiet years instead of chasing hype.

As ASHRAF, I look at projects by what they actually shipped and how the design holds up under real use. Solana’s origin is a clear example of that approach. The idea came from real systems experience, the team built it step by step, and the network launched with a working product rather than just a promise. That kind of path is what I track when I study how networks grow from an idea into something people use every day.
