Philanthropist Collen Mashawana builds home for blind mother in just three weeks

In a moving display of compassion, philanthropist Collen Mashawana has changed the life of Cynthia Nompumelelo Mkhonta a 35-year-old blind single mother of four by building her a fully furnished home in just three weeks.

The handover ceremony took place on 2 May 2025 in Louville, Ehlanzeni District Municipality, Mpumalanga, marking yet another impactful milestone for the Collen Mashawana Foundation.

Cynthia lost her sight in 2022 due to illness and had been living in a dilapidated mud house, struggling to raise her children with the support of her older sister. The hazardous conditions of their previous dwelling made daily life difficult and unsafe.

Upon learning of her situation, Mashawana, in partnership with Metro FM, quickly mobilized resources to build a safe, modern home offering Cynthia and her children a renewed sense of hope.

The Collen Mashawana Foundation, renowned for its dedication to uplifting vulnerable communities, has built over 200 homes across South Africa for the elderly, persons with disabilities, and child-headed households.

“This is about restoring dignity and giving families a real chance to thrive,” Mashawana said during the handover.

When we meet elderly citizens without safe shelter, we will build them homes. If we find individuals with disabilities living in unacceptable conditions or who lack employment and educational access, we will work to enhance their situations. Should we come across a community without access to clean water, we will drill boreholes to supply them with safe drinking water. We will not tire in our efforts to improve the lives of underprivileged South Africans.

We have successfully secured a stand for Surprise Khoza, an unemployed master's degree graduate who has been living with a disability for many years. His difficult living conditions over the decades have significantly worsened his health. Fortunately, with the support of Wesbank, the Collen Mashawana Foundation will soon gift him a new, fully furnished home in just a few weeks. Churches in our communities play a vital role in healing wounds, fostering faith and hope, and creating a positive environment for believers to worship and share grace. I hope for a day when church leaders consciously choose to implement ongoing programs that address the challenges faced by our people.
