Reproductive Justice remains a contested issue at the crossroads of health, human rights, and criminal law in Africa. While laws in some jurisdictions protect the life of the unborn child, questions persist around the scope of legal defences available to women and health practitioners providing essential SRHR care.
The upcoming Reproductive Justice Training by the Uganda Law Society and partners provides a timely platform to unpack these evolving legal defences, draw lessons from regional experiences, and reflect on pathways for reform and litigation that advance justice and reproductive rights in Africa > https://t.co/T6kdxh6uw9
What a kickoff! 🚀
Day 1 of the #AhakiMentorship Programme was packed with energy, passion, and purpose. We’re carrying that momentum into Day 2 and looking forward to all the learning and connections still to come as we continue working together to advance reproductive justice in Africa.
DECISION ALERT: A Milestone for Reproductive Justice in Malawi📢
This case establishes an important precedent for reproductive justice and the protection of girls’ rights in Malawi and across Africa. The court has ruled that denying reproductive care to minors who are victims of sexual violence violates their sexual and reproductive health rights. It also holds the Ministry of Health and the Human Rights Commission accountable for failing to protect these rights, and underscores the urgent need for clear national guidelines to ensure consistent and lawful access to safe abortion services.

This session examined the role of research and advocacy capacity enhancement in promoting reproductive justice and explored how foreign policies and donor priorities intersect with efforts to advance reproductive rights. Panelists Alimah Komuhangi, Samuel Kyalo, and Nimrod Muhumuza shared insights on how evidence generation, advocacy capacity enhancement, and strategic approaches can advance more effective and sustainable progress in reproductive justice.
Moderated by Acksam Nsubuga, the discussion tasked mentees to identify key issues affecting reproductive justice in their contexts and to design advocacy and capacity enhancement initiatives that could help address those challenges. #AhakiMentorship

I am excited to exchange experiences with other young leaders and apply new insights to strengthen community-based SRHR programmes in Tanzania and beyond." - @Elibarick_

Today, at the 85th Ordinary Session of the @achpr_cadhp, Dr. @jessica_oga will present on our behalf, delivering an urgent call to dismantle colonial-era laws that criminalise reproductive autonomy across Africa.
We will highlight the Kampala Charter on Decriminalising Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, adopted at the 3rd Reproductive Justice Litigation Baraza, as a reflection of Africa’s collective demand for coherence, accountability, and liberation from colonial and neo-colonial control.
We will emphasize that preventable maternal deaths and colonial laws policing African bodies are not African values; true African values lie in ubuntu, care, dignity, and justice.
We will urge the Commission and Member States to address criminal abortion laws, strengthen state reporting, and take decisive action under existing frameworks to realise the Maputo Protocol’s promise for Africa’s women and girls.
