Red Top Mt. Trail
“Trail #102 climbs for about 3 miles, with occasional steep, rocky stretches before reaching Red Top. There are remnants of an old lookout at the top and spectacular views of the Selkirk Mountains and into Canada.”

Preserving Your Harvest
“While canning and preserving may seem like more of a food topic than a gardening topic, isn’t your organic vegetable garden pretty much a backyard produce department for your kitchen? Every year, I’m saddened when I have to put my garden to bed and then add tomatoes, herbs and cucumbers to my grocery list. Yes, I’m grateful for fresh produce year-round in this modern age, but I still want to extend my growing season and have my own home-grown delicious produce for a full 12 months.”

A Timeless Journey: The Arid Peak Lookout
“The Arid Peak Lookout in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest was built in 1934 to help spot wildfires that may have been sparked by the Milwaukee Railroad Line. In 1969 its doors were closed and remained so for more than 25 years before its renovation.”

Home Composting 101
“Making your own compost is probably the most important and beneficial thing you can do for your organic garden. The success of your garden depends on the health of your soil, and the health of the soil depends on how you feed and amend it. Fertilizers can add both macro and micronutrients to the dirt, but nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other nutrients are not typically in a form that can be readily ab-sorbed by the plants.”

Dry Creek Falls - Cascade Locks, OR
“This easy hike to a beautiful waterfall in the Columbia River Gorge takes you through a lush mossy forest ending at the scenic falls that drop 74 feet over the basalt “amphitheater” wall. The trail to the falls is a section of the famous Pacific Crest Trail.”

Making Your Own Waves
“Swimming and water activities, such as water walking and water aerobics, have many physical and mental health benefits for any age and any level of athletic ability. Living in a place with so many beautiful bodies of water makes it easy to enjoy some of those activities while cooling off on a hot summer day. Aside from being fun, this low-to-no cost activity, helps keep your body in shape.”

Sharing his Passions
“Dan, who lives in Spokane, grew up in the small town of Elk, Was. His father, Rod, was a pastor at a small church and an avid deer hunter. The Staton family table fare regularly consisted of venison. “ I remember when I was a little kid and asking my mom, ‘When are we going to have something besides deer? I’m seriously getting tired of deer,’” Dan recalled with a chuckle.”

Modern Farmhouse Brimming with European Elegance
“This home in the Fox Hollow neighborhood stays true to the modern aesthetic with clean lines and a neutral color scheme that plays off the contrast between black and white. Custom features such as wood accent panels, stone walls and rough-hewn beams provide the warm, rustic, touch associated with both farmhouse and European provincial design.”

Food for Thought
“Food. It’s one of the three elements that sustain life. And, like water and air, it’s often taken for granted. We shop and cook and dine without much thought to where our food comes from and how it is produced. Convenience is often priority, and our food and drink industry rises to meet the demand.”

Pend Oreille River Water Trail
"It is rare in this area to find official water trails meant for paddle sports with a destination as spectacular as a 2401ft waterfall. The paddle from the launch up the Pend Oreille River, immediately above the Boundary Dam, is absolutely spectacular with dense forests, tall limestone cliffs, caves, and brilliantly colored emerald green water."

Weeds in the Garden
"I have to admit, there are few things more satisfying than pulling weeds and then standing back and admiring the neat, clean space around your plants. When I was a teenager, my family moved into a new house. The backyard was a decent size, but one-third of it was completely overgrown with weeds and tangled shrubs."

Pickleball for Fun and Fitness
"Part of what draws people to the game of pickleball is that it is so versatile. It's social but it also can be competitive and active. Even those who struggle with injuries or limitations can play. Because the court is smaller than a tennis court, the game allows players to be close enough to one another that they can hold conversations."
