For those who aren’t very familiar with the CAF justice system, Topp pleaded guilty to 2 charges of sec 129, conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline. This is a charge under the National Defence Act that is used as a catch all to ensure a charged member is all but guaranteed to be convicted of something. While it can have serious consequences, it almost never does. Topp well knew that by making 2 videos in uniform that called out the gov, he was committing a military crime & would be convicted. I’ll never support how he stood up (in uniform making a video) but fully support that he did. The mandate ordered by the CDS was an illegal order & most of us knew that but those of us who served also understand the need to be neutral when in uniform, it’s critical that those serving sacrifice their Charter right to freedom of expression to maintain the integrity and independence of the CAF from the gov of the day. We wear a CDN flag on our uniforms, not a liberal or conservative flag. This was a just sentence in my opinion and the judge clearly ignored the extreme, over the top nonsense coming from the prosecutor & the unit CO. I hope there’s a go fund me page to pay Topp’s fine & legal fees…I’ll be donating if there is. I hope other fair minded, freedom loving CDN’s will too!
