This is Bonnie Pierce, a 38-year-old mother of three from St. Paul, Minnesota. Her house caught fire. She and two of her children escaped, then realized her toddler was still inside.
Bonnie went back in, found the child, but could not get out. She shielded the child with her body. She died from her burns. The child survived.
A GoFundMe for her family raised about $42,000.
By comparison, more than $1,000,000 was raised on GoFundMe for Lindsay Clancy, who was charged with killing her children.
It is a sad reflection of the society we have become.

I wasn’t surprised when Clancy wasn’t convicted, because this isn’t the first occurrence, and it won’t be the last.

Courts in the United States have accepted insanity (not criminally responsible) defenses in cases where a parent kills their child during a postpartum psychotic episode at other times. As the prosecution, I would have asked Lindsay if she was familiar with the Yates case, and if her defense had advised her about it.

Yates was first convicted, but after appeal, she was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 2006. She has remained in a Texas psychiatric hospital since. She has been offered opportunities for release, but so far has chosen the hospital as her home.
