#NUFC were 12th after 16 games last year and went on to finish 5th and qualify for the CL. Saying we’re going to struggle and finish bottom half this year after 5 games, of which we’ve lost only one (to a 90’+11 minute goal in a game we bossed with ten men), is a bit premature.
You could argue that tonight’s game was a free hit, but this competition is brutal. Unless we want to go into the final game away at PSG needing a result, we realistically now need three wins and two draws from the next six matches. We simply cannot lose our next game. #NUFC
We gave as good as we got, but a couple moments of real quality killed the game. Can’t help but feel that a fit Yoane Wissa would have made a massive difference tonight. Onwards and upwards #NUFC
Bruno Guimarães on Nick Woltemade:
“I like it, I like it! He’s impressed me in training.
“We can see he’s not used to the Premier League pace…he got cramps after 45 minutes…I’ve never seen this before to be honest!
“Scoring on his debut was a moment to remember for him and we hope this continues…”
#NUFC
@Blue_Footy There is absolutely zero chance you watched the 3pm kick off between Newcastle and Wolves so how could you possibly know that Woltemade struggled (despite the goal)?
File that under ‘hard-fought wins’. Dreadful first 20 minutes, fought back and excellent for the next 30, then quietly controlled the game in the second half. Poor defensively all game, though. Lewis Hall has to start next weekend if not on Thursday. #NUFC
After three weeks of scoffing at the ‘big man up top’ descriptions in the media, and statistical deep-dives on how he’s really a creative forward better with the ball at his feet, Woltemade opens his #NUFC account with the most Peter Crouch goal you’ll see.
That is a clear foul but outside the box, so the only possible determination is that there are too many players in close proximity for it to be a denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity. #NUFC
No “fan” would give up a ticket for Barcelona at home. Serious questions have to be asked about how many ST holders are touts or even exist at all #NUFC
@Jayb1970NUFC Fabian Schar was easily the best penalty taker at the club even before Isak left. Gordon should never have taken the one we got at Goodison last year
And there you go: #NUFC have named only two senior goalkeepers in their Champions League squad. Given Nick Pope's injury record over the past two years that seems incredibly risky.
I’ve no idea if the accusation Isak didn’t want us to qualify in the CL is true and ultimately, it didn’t matter in the end as he scored the pens that came his way that got us there at the end of the season. What was clear though was he was either playing with an injury or not trying as much for the team. Maybe both. Maybe neither. But his behaviour and desperation to move suggests that he wasn’t trying that hard, as there’s been 0 mention by him or anyone else of recovering from an injury that limited him for a large part of last season.
Something clearly wasn’t right with him and we did quite a big part on our post Ipswich pod at the end of April as he pretty much didn’t move all game.
The only explanation we could come to was that he absolutely had to be carrying an injury that would maybe need surgery post season. The facts are that post cup final his form nosedived and he stopped running in games. He was taken off before the 80th min in 7 PL consecutive fixtures, including games we were chasing a winner (Brentford being the most obvious and strangest at the time). If all of the above is a headloss then so be it, but NUFC fans were taking about his form and (lack of) effort in games before it was clear he was desperate to be off.
Anyway, can’t wait to see the new lads play against Wolves and Barcelona. It’s a great time to be an NUFC fan.
