Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide, a seven-amino-acid chain (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro).

It was developed in Russia in the 1980s as a modified fragment of ACTH, with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail added to make it more stable.

It has mainly been studied in laboratory and animal models, where researchers look at its effects on neurotrophic factors such as BDNF and on neuronal signaling. In Russia it has already been approved as a drug. However in Europe this is still for research use only.
