I am an avid proponent of a subgenre of speculative fiction that I like to refer to as "weird science-fantasy." In part, for my own publications in gaming, I got the idea from the old EC Comics magazine, but in my view, this subgenre is best crystalized to encompass sword-and-sorcery, science fiction, and weird, otherworldly horror. These are the themes we explore in my tabletop adventure game, Hyperborea, whose fictional inspirations are primarily Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, and Clark Ashton Smith. A more modern example of this evocative style is demonstrated by the great Karl Edward Wagner, who created the immortal anti-hero, Kane. Kane is a swordsman and a sorcerer, and it is not unusual for him to dabble with strange artifacts from other worlds and dimensions. If you can find these stories, I would highly recommend them.
