🚨BREAKING: The family of Iryna Zarutska is preparing a civil lawsuit to hold additional parties accountable for her murder.

Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, was fatally stabbed on a Charlotte light rail train in August 2025 by Decarlos Brown Jr., a man with a known criminal history. Brown has been charged with first-degree murder and faces federal charges as well, though competency issues have complicated the criminal proceedings.

As the one-year anniversary approaches, the family’s attorney has stated that a civil lawsuit will be filed soon. The family is seeking accountability beyond the criminal case, including examination of public safety failures on the transit system that may have allowed Brown access to the train.

They hope the legal action will push for meaningful changes to better protect riders.
