This week a physician told my partner that he is so smart that he “should have gone to medical school.”

To which I promptly replied, “Or nursing school.”

Advocacy Tip:
Know what you’re capable of giving in this season.

Is it money?
Is it time?
Is it expertise?
Is it attention?

Commit to delivering in that area for a defined season. You can't do it all. It's okay.

Let the guilt go. It's wasted energy.

It makes sense when acute care nurses are adamant that new nurses get acute care experience…because that’s what they know.

But anyone who’s telling you there’s one RIGHT way to enter + navigate a profession as broad + beautiful as nursing needs a perspective shift.

Our conversations about health MUST include how we build our cities and communities.

Many nurses know this.

But it’s one thing to *know* it…and another to view urban planning as a critical intervention within our professional domain.

Yes, our healthcare system is broken.

But please do not use this narrative as reason to give up your agency to act honorably within the system - or to work to change it.

The reason we’re hard on other people is because we’re hard on ourselves.

More care for yourself 👉🏼 more care for others.

Understand yourself 👉🏼 understand others

Systems change will always start with YOU. That’s power.

The foundation of a fulfilling career + making meaningful change in the world is

1️⃣ a clear vision

2️⃣a driving mission.

If you don’t do the work on those 2 pieces first, you may find yourself in spaces that don’t serve you, doing work that doesn’t light you up.

Stop telling employers what they want to hear in interviews.

If you’re not a good fit, you want to know now rather than 6 months in when you’re stuck doing a job you don’t like with a team you can’t stand.

Nursing has made me an exponentially better communicator and advocate - for my patients, my team, AND myself.

What if the purpose of higher education isn’t to teach you new facts, so much as to teach you a new way to think?

College may not be for everyone, but it does have value beyond getting you a job.
