@VinamreKasanaa Good video. As a company focussed on natural way of dealing with diabetes and weight loss and bracing for the GLP-1 wave, this is a good video that everybody contemplating GLP-1 should see. Please post after videos also (2 months/3 months). Thanks
GLP-1 storm to hit India from tomorrow..
So the GLP-1 floodgates open on Mar 20th with 50+ companies expected to launch their brands upon the patent expiry. The monthly cost could go down as low as 1000/- per month.
But is it a good and viable solution for all those suffering from weight issues and diabetes?
At NutriNeel, we focus on suitable diets and timelines to achiever the necessary weight loss with focus and discipline rather than just medication. So why are we writing about GLP-1 here?
GLP-1 maybe useful for a section of people who are suffering from chronic issues which has been diagnosed by their doctors and taken only under medical supervision. GLP-1 may be a new class of drugs in India for weight loss, but it has been in existence for quite some time (2005) for diabetes and since then repurposed for general weight loss since 2010. In India these drugs are being launched now as generics and are expected to find a large market.
Let’s just remember a few things before we pile on these drugs:
· Broadly, these drugs have to be taken throughout life once started. One may think of maintaining reduced weight through exercise and diet after a few months of these but that rarely happens.
· There could potential side effects (just google them) but for those who are taking them for cosmetic reasons, do remember that there is a side effect called “GLP-1 face” that causes skin to droop and appear saggy. Not a direct effect of GLP-1 itself but impact of large weight loss quickly.
· Other side effects which will be known in future.
What does this mean?
· Simple. These drugs will become extremely popular as they are sort of short cuts for weight loss but the full impact needs to be evaluated by doctors who need to prescribe these drugs only as a medicine and not a cosmetic makeover.
· For many people, the regular boring diet + exercise combo may be better off for sustained weight loss as a lifestyle change rather than popping off tablets.
· Lastly, these drugs are known to cause mood swings and other mental issues. We strongly believe that food needs to provide comfort and energy to one’s life and not take away from it.
So should you take these drugs or not? Discuss with your doctor in detail about the pros and cons and then decide.
If you are not a GLP-1 type of person and looking to manage weight the healthier way, let’s speak.
Designer Rice – Is this the magic food many of us have been waiting for?
The name itself sounds funny but the concept is brilliant. CSIR India which has been pioneering various foods for specific applications (such as dry foods for space travel etc) has come out with designer rice with about 22% protein content and low GI of 54. This is sweet news to a large percentage of population in India that consumes rice as the primary meal (esp. South and East India). It will prove as a great option for diabetics. Further it is enriched with iron, folic acid and vitamin B12. If all this is not enough, this is not a dream or a far-off project. The technology has been handed over to Tata Consumer Products and SS Soul Foods on Feb 18, 2026, by CSIR.
Do note that this is ~3x the protein of regular rice (the key reasons nutritionists ask clients to glow slow on rice). But long evolved food habits rarely change much in majority of population and that is why this is absolutely wonderful news. Just hoping that the taste and bite profile is palatable to most of the rice eating populace.
CSIR is working on many more such things and let us wish them all the best.
Here’s to scientific nutrition and good health!!
Fatty Liver – For a long time this was associated with mostly excess alcohol consumption but Lancet reports that nearly 40% (!!) of Indian adults may have Fatty Liver disease and it need not be linked to alcohol consumption at all. Please refer to the study as well as an article based on the study (see the first comment). In fact, the study is based on non-alcoholic consumers.
In other words, the study concludes that Fatty Liver condition is more driven by lifestyle conditions, dietary habits, and metabolic health conditions more than just alcohol consumption (In fact the study designed excluded alcohol consumers)!
This is quite crazy and points out to an epidemic of large proportions. To use a few words that researchers use – Fatty Liver is now classified as a metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a condition closely linked to obesity, insulin resistance, high blood sugar, and other metabolic risk factors rather than alcohol consumption.
So while the damage is related to lifestyle conditions, the other side and the positive side of the story is Fatty Liver can be managed through lifestyle changes especially in its early days. The template being the same old boring standard stuff: Body weight management, Healthy eating habits, reasonable physical exercise, stress management etc.
We at NutriNeel, based on our interaction with our clients, have always been suspicious of Fatty Liver being a by-product of poor lifestyle choices as well but most of our arguments were shot down in front of alcohol consumption. Now it is clear that Fatty Liver may even be much more of a lifestyle condition than that of alcohol consumption.
Add to the injury, a large subset of the population may already be on its way to fibrosis which ultimately leads to severe liver damage.

That means that the effective path to control and reverse Fatty Liver is now in the hands of the consumer rather than the physician per se.
