Many people supplement with vitamins A & D because of their antiviral and other health benefits. Their balance is key to getting their full effect. See my new blog post for the full rundown of these amazing vitamins!

During COVID-19 outbreak, it was recommended to take zinc since it interfered with the replication of the SARS-COV-2 virus inside the cell. However, there is a fixed happy relationship between zinc and copper of 25 to 1. So if one took the recommended zinc 50 mg a day or higher, and didn't take copper, one would become copper deficient since zinc competes with copper for absorption.
Copper deficiency causes:
1. Anemia: Copper is necessary for the proper absorption of iron from the digestive tract. A deficiency can lead to anemia, characterized by a reduced number of red blood cells and lower hemoglobin levels.
2. Fatigue and Weakness: Insufficient copper levels may contribute to general fatigue and weakness, as the mineral is involved in energy production at the cellular level.
3. Neurological Issues: Copper is essential for the normal functioning of the nervous system. Deficiency can lead to neurological symptoms such as numbness and tingling, difficulty walking, and problems with coordination.
4. Osteoporosis: Copper is involved in the formation and maintenance of bone tissue. A lack of copper may contribute to bone density loss, leading to osteoporosis.
5. Paleness: Copper deficiency can affect the production of melanin, resulting in paler skin and hair.
6. Impaired Immune Function: Copper is essential for the proper functioning of the immune system. A deficiency may compromise the body's ability to fight infections.
7. Connective Tissue Problems: Copper is involved in the formation of collagen, a key component of connective tissues. Deficiency can lead to problems such as joint pain and flexibility issues.
8. Cardiovascular Issues: Copper is important for maintaining healthy blood vessels, and a deficiency may contribute to cardiovascular problems.
9. Hypothyroidism: Copper plays a role in the metabolism of thyroid hormones. A deficiency may affect thyroid function, leading to symptoms of hypothyroidism.
10. Hair and Skin Changes: Changes in hair color, texture, and skin pigmentation can occur with copper deficiency.
Therefore, if one wishes to take 50 mg of zinc, one should also take 2mg of copper at a different time of day. Otherwise, the antiviral benefit of zinc is overwhelmed by numerous serious copper deficiency symptoms.
The whirling dance between Vitamin D and Vitamin A
During the Covid-19 pandemic, many people starting taking larger doses of Vitamin D for its antiviral protection and treatment. However, too much of Vitamin D can suppress the anti-inflammatory effects of Vitamin A and vice versa.
Vitamin A and Vitamin D are both fat-soluble vitamins that play crucial roles in the body, but they interact in complex ways. Here are some key points about their interaction:
1. Regulation of Gene Expression: Both vitamins are involved in regulating the expression of genes. Vitamin A, in the form of retinoic acid, and Vitamin D, in the form of calcitriol, bind to their respective receptors in the nucleus of cells. This binding influences the expression of various genes that control a wide range of biological processes.
2. Immune Function: Vitamin A and D both play roles in immune function, but their interaction here can be complex. Vitamin D is known for its role in promoting immune health, particularly in enhancing the body's ability to fight infections and reduce inflammation. Vitamin A also supports the immune system, especially in maintaining the health of mucous barriers in the lungs and gut. However, too much of either vitamin can lead to immune dysregulation.
3. Bone Health: Vitamin D is crucial for bone health as it helps in calcium absorption in the gut. While Vitamin A is also important for bone growth and development, excessive Vitamin A intake, especially in the form of retinol, can interfere with Vitamin D's bone-protective effects and may lead to bone demineralization.
3. Competitive Interaction: There's some evidence that Vitamin A and Vitamin D may competitively interact in certain contexts. High levels of Vitamin A can interfere with Vitamin D's functions, particularly in bone health, by competing for the same receptors.
4. Balanced Intake is Key: It’s important to maintain a balance between these vitamins. An excess or deficiency of either can lead to health problems. For instance, too much Vitamin A can negate the beneficial effects of Vitamin D, and vice versa.
5. Different Sources and Requirements: These vitamins are obtained from different dietary sources. Vitamin A is found in the liver, dairy products, and in beta-carotene form in colorful fruits and vegetables.
6. Vitamin D is found in fatty fish, and fortified foods, and can be synthesized in the skin in response to sunlight exposure. The body's requirements for these vitamins can vary based on age, gender, and other health factors.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the interior of the body will become disordered and healthy energy flows blocked by poor nutrition, toxins, and poor lifestyles. Good digestion and nutrient absorption are severely impacted when digestive flow is blocked.
Unbalanced and unmindful nutrient intake, like that prescribed in the Standard American Diet (SAD), could be compared to a poorly maintained but main thoroughfare maligned with numerous potholes. The ride is chaotic and bumpy with frequent damage to the vehicle and passengers.
The daily practice of a nutritional flow state can create a balanced life that flows smoothly from one purposefully enriching activity to the next, not unlike a road trip on a smooth highway to a favorite beach.
Mindful and well-prepared meals create light within, strength without, and an overall zest for life. This will give you the energy and foundation to reach all those other flow states you are pursuing in life so that you’ll find it even more enlivened and full of rich experiences.
The problem with American nutrition is that there is so much misinformation out there, it’s hard to get to running when walking has never been fully understood yet alone mastered. When it comes to optimal nutrition, you must work hard initially to create your own nutritional flow
In my book, I will encourage using flow states to become proficient in preventive health and well-being as it is outlined by Functional Medicine. I will also take a more literal approach to flow by showing the delicate flow and integration of the organs and tissues of the body.
Organs can either work smoothly or become blocked when a person is unhealthy. I want to help people find their groove and have good nutrition become as effortless as a walk in the park. It will take some initial effort though, with a sincere desire to find and achieve wellness.
When we treat nutrition and lifestyle as a hobby, we can grow our skills in fun and interesting ways while improving our health at the same time.
