In many countries outside Africa, classroom hours are less, but still people learn and develop. Perhaps Uganda is one of the countries where students stay longest in class on a typical school day - especially in boarding schools.

On top of the long class hours, day scholars return home with daily loads of homework. They’re even given more work to carry home for weekends! School books and homework become a nuisance at home! What special output justifies this intensive schooling?

Dear Minister of Education, we really need to do something about this. This kind of schooling destroys brains and wholesome growth of our people. Many grade-obsessed parents can’t speak out, some fearing the blackmail from schools asking them to take their children elsewhere. Classwork is important, but education and life in general are not all about books.

There are no Ebola patients in Uganda.

Tomorrow morning, the last Ebola patient will be discharged from the isolation unit at Mulago Hospital.

When that happens, Uganda starts counting down.

If 42 days pass without a single new case, WHO guidelines stipulate that we will be declared Ebola free.

I have said it before.

Epidemics come to die in Uganda.

We have the expertise.

We have the most public health aware citizens in the world.
