I went on a rabbit hole on Prototaxites, and I am absolutely fascinated at the possibility that they could give us some insight on their inevitability of cancer in our species….. (1)

Basically, if it ain’t fungi, what is it and it’s awfully interesting that Prototaxites inhabited Earth around the same broad geological era in which some of our earliest fossil evidence of cancer appears.

You could therefore systematically characterize unusual preserved molecules and degradation products, attempt to determine their likely biological precursors, synthesize plausible versions of those precursor molecules, and then screen those compounds against human cell lines.

Prototaxites can be chemically distinguished from genuine Rhynie-chert fungi that experienced the same fossilization conditions.

…and could any reconstructed mechanisms inform cancer biology? The answer could ultimately be the fossils don’t preserve enough information. But I’m fascinated on why we aren’t looking more into this.
