Rwanda Foreign Policy Explained | What Does a Rwandan Diplomat Actually Do?
We often see diplomats at official meetings, ceremonies and international events. But those moments are only one part of the job.
Much of the work happens behind the scenes: preparing for meetings, following developments, building and fostering relationships, negotiating, listening to partners, supporting and protecting Rwandans abroad, and looking for opportunities that advance Rwanda’s interests.
This work can help open doors for Rwandan businesses, strengthen partnerships, support Rwandans living abroad, and connect Rwanda with new ideas, knowledge and opportunities.
This week on our web series “Rwanda Foreign Policy Explained”, we take you behind the scenes to explore what diplomats actually do—and how their work connects Rwanda to the world.

Today, Thursday 20 August 2026, the Ministry of Interior (MININTER), in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), launched the project on “Strengthening Rwanda’s Capacities for Firefighting and Emergency Response”.
The project is supported by the Government of Poland through UNIDO and aims to strengthen Rwanda’s capacity to prevent, prepare for and respond effectively to fires and other emergencies, thereby enhancing the protection of lives, property and livelihoods.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. SESONGA Benjamin highlighted that Rwanda continues to experience economic growth, urbanization, infrastructure development and expansion of industrial and commercial activities which bring many benefits to our country but also create new and increasingly complex risks related to fire and other emergencies. Thus, the need to continuously assess whether our existing systems, capacities, equipment, infrastructure, regulations, human resources and coordination mechanisms are adequate to address these risks.
As the first major step under the project, a feasibility study will be conducted and will provide the evidence base for defining and prioritizing the activities to be implemented under the project.

"Discipline is important. It is what helps you decide what you want, how you go about achieving it, and why it matters. It guides you to make the right choices, to respect others, to respect yourself, and to keep seeking knowledge. When you have knowledge, discipline gives even greater value to what you know. It keeps you focused on your purpose instead of allowing yourself to drift into things that do not build you, but can instead destroy you.
That is why coming here for this training, being part of this Itorero, and everything you have learned is meant to instill discipline in you. If you embrace it, it will take you far. If you disregard it or fail to apply it as you should, it may take you only so far before your progress comes to an end." President Kagame | Indangamirwa 16th Cohort #MeetThePresident
"Among the many things you are taking away with you, leave this place with one thing firmly in your minds: You are now builders of something. You are problem solvers. You are innovators. And you are also going to contribute
to this nation, the national effort.
Rwanda will not be developed by people coming from somewhere else, zero. If you thought there is anything like that, quickly change your mind. It is not like that. It doesn't happen like that. You must be the one to do it." President Kagame | Indangamirwa 16 #MeetThePresident

Today, the Ministry of Interior (MININTER), in collaboration with the @Rwandapolice , @RwandaEmergency ), and the @CityofKigali , launched a training program for public servants on fire prevention, firefighting, and the use of firefighting equipment.
The initiative focuses on training staff from various institutions on how to use fire extinguishers. It was launched with employees from the Gender Monitoring Office and the Special Guarantee Fund and will extend to other institutions.
While launching the program, the Permanent Secretary of MININTER, Mr. Sesonga Benjamin, emphasized the importance of public servants knowing how to use firefighting equipment and how to combat fires; he noted that these skills are crucial for ensuring workplace safety and mitigating the potential impact of a fire outbreak.
