There was a semi-well known interview of the famed Argentine writer JL Borges where he explains this.
Borges: I have done most of my reading in English. I find English a far finer language than Spanish.
William F Buckley: Why?
Borges: Well, many reasons. Firstly, English is both a Germanic and a Latin language. Those two registers—for any idea you take, you have two words. Those words will not mean exactly the same. For example if I say “regal” that is not exactly the same thing as saying “kingly.” Or if I say “fraternal” that is not the same as saying “brotherly.” Or “dark” and “obscure.” Those words are different. It would make all the difference—speaking for example—the Holy Spirit, it would make all the difference in the world in a poem if I wrote about the Holy Spirit or I wrote the Holy Ghost, since “ghost” is a fine, dark Saxon word, but “spirit” is a light Latin word. Then there is another reason. The reason is that I think that, of all languages, English is the most physical of all languages.
WFB: The most what?
Borges: Physical. You can, for example, say “He loomed over.” You can’t very well say that in Spanish.
WFB: “Asomó?”*
Borges: Well, no, no, they’re not exactly the same. And then you have, in English, you can do almost anything with verbs and prepositions. For example, to “laugh off,” to “dream away.” Those things can’t be said in Spanish. To “live down” something, to “live up to” something—you can’t say those things in Spanish. They can’t be said. Or really in any Romance language.
LOL. Shitty Marriott property 1 fucked me in London last time I was here, so I booked property 2, which also just fucked me in a different way.
Pleased to be abandoning Ambassador/etc going forward.
Cyberattack on French supermarkers. Someone remotely took over refrigeration controllers and made them to defrost. Target temperature set to 50°C. Staff opening freezers in the morning were hit by a wave of hot air. Millions of euros lost. France spent years debating food sovereignty to depend on a firmware update? https://t.co/mGijynnrUD
Some hardware wallet manufacturers are bragging their devices have no screen, making them invulnerable to Ledger-style supply chain attacks. They’re a) wrong and b) bragging their devices, even untampered, are useless.
Without a screen, you can’t verify the transaction you are signing pays the right address. And malware that swaps out addresses before signing is quite common.
So the hardware wallet is useless.
Removing the screen doesn't stop attackers. While man-in-the-middling the screen-to-secure-enclave connection to see seed phrases is the easiest backdoor, you’d be foolish to think that’s the limit of this attacker’s capability. They bought an entire authorized reseller and made a sequence of implants with GSM modems in them. There are a number of other attacks they could do on the wallet’s hardware and software, especially the wallets security is "we don't have screens." Or they could just put malware on the wallet to infect the host computer. Malware which can then swap out the recipient address in a transaction before the screenless hardware wallet blindly signs it.
@mbhbox Yeah. Both near/in the City. The Dixon, where I had 3 rooms during Ascot, lost a rental return from one of them for several hours, despite repeated inquiries. The CitizenM refused to store luggage for a couple days before my stay.
❗️ AI is already killing people. A Russian drone that killed 3 in Zaporizhzhia in July left the strike decision to an Nvidia Jetson Orin chip, Ukrainian investigators say.
Nvidia says it is a consumer product sold to students.
This was pretty ambiguous last time I was here — the cheapest Uber services use the remote car park which is hell with luggage (shuttle bus, dropped into a large car park). Backup www a London black cab on meter (GBP 150?) but too small.
TIL LHR T4 has “priority pick up” in ST car park outside the terminal (across 3 lanes only). Used by Uber for at least some services (XL, and what I did for $10 more, exec xxl, a Vito tourer).
GBP 195 to the City using Wheely, or GBP 117 (I think) for Exec XXL, both Vito.)
