We are glad to collaborate with the Marine Protected Area Punta Campanella within the framework of the LIFE DELFI project and with the aim of reducing the interaction between dolphins and fishers.
The sperm whale "Salvatore" likes the Marine Protected Area Regno di Nettuno. Re-sighted last Saturday between Ischia and Ventotene, in the underwater canyon of Punta Imperatore, the whale had already been photographed in May 2009 and "recaptured" ten years later, in July 2019.
The sad finding of a dead fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), in a small bay of #Capri.
Pasquale Raicaldo tells the story for Repubblica, with extraordinary and moving images.

Head and tail up to everyone during these interesting times.
Sometimes the conditions in our lives need to change drastically to remind us of what matters and which things are going wrong. This time is for sure also a time to think about our nature. #thinkingofnaturetoo
Do you know how cetacean calves drink their milk?🐬🍼
As we saw in a previous post, cetaceans have no mobility on their lips.

FUN FACT!
The range of Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus) seems to be limited by water temperature, with animals most common in waters between 15°C and 20°C and rarely found in waters below 10°C. They are therefore widely distributed in the Mediterranen sea #cetaceanconservation
Risso’s dolphins can have scars left by other individuals, but they actually have no teeth in their upper jaws and just a small number on their lower jaw! This is the reason why they swallow their squid entirely.

Cetaceans have a highly developed sound repertoire that they use for several things. We are able to record them with hydrophone (water microphones) and see the sound represented on a spectrogram like this one!
The white lines are whistles from a dolphin!
Fun fact! 🧠 💤
Sperm whales sleep vertically so they can ascend outside the water and take a breath, because just like us, they are mammals and have lungs.

What do you think the animal with the biggest brain on… https://t.co/zfpaEmQUxt
In 2014, researchers recorded the deepest and longest dive made by a cetacean. It was down to 2,992 meters and took over two hours (120 minutes). It was made by a Cuvier’s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris). Definitely a record holder!
Sometimes we tell lame dolphin jokes…. on porpoise!
And with this welcome to our bad jokes post series! If you know any great or even bad cetacean jokes let us know in the comments!
We hope to bring a smile upon your faces every now and then with this series !
