An Egyptian doctor, Dr. Ahmed Motawalli Al-Sawi (د. أحمد متولي الصاوي) has expressed the opinion that Sudanese asylum seekers and refugees should embrace martyrdom (dying) rather than escaping. Despite our governments (Canada, US etc.) providing aid to neighboring countries like Egypt to assist with the crisis, Sudanese asylum seekers and refugees still encounter legal challenges when crossing into Egypt and face further difficulties when they arrive. This rhetoric is incredibly violent and dehumanizing, and it predates the current crisis, but is even more apparent now. We know this isn’t reflective of all Egyptians but this needs to be called out.
