At the bar where I am, I decided to have a conversation with one of the waitresses.

A very pretty young girl.

Turned out that we're from the same state.

Me: How old are you?

"I am 20 years old, sir"

Me: Have you written Jamb?

"No sir, I did not even write Waec. There is no money to go to school. I am the one responsible for 2 of my younger ones, sir"

Me: How many children does your father have?

"Seven sir."

Me: How much is your salary here?

"50k sir"

Me: Do you have a boyfriend?

"No sir, I don't."

Me: What you want to do with your life? Do you want to go to the university or what?

"Sir, I want to go to a catering school. I want to learn how to do different things, sir"

Me: How much is the catering school asking you to pay?

"Sir, it's expensive ooo"

Me: How much?

"Sir, they said N400k".

Me: Alright, you can go.

What I am thinking to do:

I want to help her, but I have not discussed with my wife yet.

If I discuss with my wife, and she agrees with me to help her, I'll take my wife to the bar to see her.

Then my wife will be the one to give her the money.

And I don't want to fall for that temptation.

Otherwise, she'll start using me as a cash cow and savior.

Our house help asked for a ₦10,000 salary increase.

We said no immediately.

Her request: ₦70,000 → ₦80,000 per month.

Our decision: Let her leave and save the extra ₦10,000.

She resigned.

Two weeks later, after struggling to do all the cooking, cleaning and laundry ourselves, we hired someone else.

The reality:

• New house help’s salary: ₦90,000/month.

• The irony: We ended up paying ₦10,000 more for someone who had to learn everything from scratch.

We refused to pay ₦80,000 to keep someone who already knew our home, our routines and our preferences…

But happily agreed to pay ₦90,000 to a complete stranger.

Doesn’t make much sense, does it?

Yet this is exactly how many companies treat loyal employees.

They reject a reasonable raise, lose experienced staff, then spend even more recruiting and training a replacement.

Loyalty rarely gets rewarded.

Sometimes, the fastest way to earn more isn’t to work harder…

It’s to change employers.

A man owned a small supermarket. One of his cashiers had worked with him faithfully for five years.

He laughed and said, "If I increase your salary, everyone else will start asking too."

Feeling unappreciated, she resigned a month later.

What followed was expensive.

The new cashier made pricing errors, mixed up inventory, struggled with customers, and once accepted fake notes.

Sales dropped because regular customers missed the familiar face they trusted.

Within three months, the owner had lost far more than the ₦15,000 he refused to add to her salary.

When someone reminded him of his former cashier, he sighed and said:

"I thought I was saving money. I didn't realise I was losing value."

The cheapest employee isn't always the most affordable.

Experience, trust, loyalty, and institutional knowledge are assets that don't appear on a payslip, but replacing them often costs far more than rewarding them.

Sometimes, businesses don't lose their best people because they can't afford to keep them.

They lose them because they fail to recognise their worth until someone else does.
