How does a meme from 2020 randomly come back to life six years later?

This is Caesar, the original “Doge 2.” In May 2020, a normal photo of Caesar was posted online and someone declared that “Doge 2 has been officially released.”

It exploded almost instantly, pulling 140K+ likes on Twitter and tens of thousands of upvotes across Reddit. Caesar became an actual recurring character in Dogelore, complete with his own lore, fan art and community.

Then the internet moved on.

Now, six years later, Caesar is organically appearing on the front page of r/dogelore again.

The same character that was once literally debated, banned, spammed, turned into lore and eventually forgotten is resurfacing in the exact community that created him.

Doge became one of the most recognizable memes on the internet.

Caesar was Doge 2.

This is the moment Caesar stopped being “Doge 2.”

On May 12, 2020, Dr. Caesar appeared on r/dogelore.

The community immediately understood the character.

Caesar wasn't supposed to be another insane Dogelore character. He was the normal one trapped inside an insane universe.

“Caesar the down to earth dog.”

“He has come to stop the wacky and uncharacteristic.”

Then one comment basically marked the exact moment the transformation was complete:

“Caesar has now had the character development to be an actual dogelore character.”

Someone asked:

“Is Dr Caesar canon?”

The response?

“now he is.”

And it stuck.

Caesar's identity became the levelheaded, sane character surrounded by the absolute insanity of Dogelore. The community had taken a viral photo called “Doge 2” and organically turned the dog into Dr. Caesar.

Doge 2 was the viral meme.

Dr. Caesar was the character that survived it.

They tried to kill “Doge 2.”

Instead, they accidentally created Caesar.

After the initial Doge 2 explosion and controversy, r/dogelore realized Caesar couldn't survive as simply “the new Doge.” So the community did something much more interesting:

They started building him into an actual character.

On May 10, 2020, a meta thread proposed Caesar as the straight man of Dogelore, a normal, rational character surrounded by an insane universe. Even Caesar's real owner appeared in the thread and confirmed that his actual name was Caesar Zeppeli.

Two days later, Dr. Caesar hit 7,500+ upvotes.

In the comments, the community began solidifying his personality: sane, intelligent, professional, grounded and eventually a licensed psychologist/family man. One comment literally celebrated that Caesar had finally received enough character development to become “an actual dogelore character.”

Another lore post had Caesar's owner discussing an entirely different angle for him: an outsider wandering from community to community looking for somewhere that accepts him, inspired by Caesar's real journey from Twitter into r/dogelore.

That's the part of Caesar's history people forget.

“Doge 2” was the viral joke.

Caesar was what the internet built afterward.

He wasn't manufactured with a backstory.

Caesar didn't just join Dogelore.

His arrival caused a civil war.

When “Doge 2” exploded in May 2020, Caesar memes flooded r/dogelore almost overnight. Moderators began removing them, initially allowing only high-effort Caesar posts. Then users claimed even high-effort posts were disappearing and that the moderation team itself was divided over whether Caesar belonged.

The subreddit went into meltdown.

On May 11, someone literally posted “The dogelore civil war,” describing moderators fighting over Caesar and declaring that “peace and stability is over.” Users split into pro-Caesar and anti-Caesar camps.

A Caesar meme from the same day produced a comment with 1,500+ upvotes:

“Le doge civil war has arrived.”

Someone even made Captain Doge: Civil War about the infighting.

And the funniest part?

Caesar survived it.

Days later, the community was already separating the hated “forced” Doge 2 meme from Caesar himself. One comment summarized what happened perfectly:

“Doge 2 was forced. Caesar is the result of the community not shitting on a good character.”

He arrived.

He got banned.

He split the subreddit.

Then he became canon.
