Jesus lived about 600 years before Muhammad. None of them ever called themselves Muslims in the historical sense of belonging to the religion of Islam that began in the 7th century. Even the Quran creates a problem for this claim. In Quran 6:14, Muhammad is commanded to say: I am commanded to be the first of those who submit (the first Muslim). It also appears in Quran 39:12, where Muhammad says: I am commanded to be the first of the Muslims. If Muhammad is the "first Muslim," then how can Adam, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus also be Muslims? The claim contradicts itself. Muslims often explain that "Muslim" simply means one who submits to God. But if that is the meaning, then they are changing the ordinary meaning of the word. Historically, Islam as a religion began with Muhammad in the 7th century. Adam, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus did not follow the Quran, did not pray toward Mecca, did not recite the Shahada, and did not live under Islamic law. Calling them Muslims is rewriting history rather than accepting the timeline as it is. The truth does not need history to be rewritten.
