🚨 PELICAN BAY PRISON RIOT — FEBRUARY 23, 2000

• Pelican Bay State Prison in Crescent City, California, erupted into a violent racial riot involving Southern Mexicans (Sureños) and Black inmates.

• The blacks were green lighted by Mexican Mafia shot caller Alfie Sosa after a black inmate disrespected a Southern Mexican a year earlier.

��� Approximately 150–200 inmates were in the B-yard recreation area when the Sureños attacked all black inmates with prison-made shanks.

• Guards initially used verbal commands, warning shots and pepper spray to stop the fighting.

• When those measures failed, officers opened fire.

• One inmate was killed by a headshot and numerous others were wounded.

• Dozens more suffered stab wounds and other injuries during the riot that lasted almost 30-minutes.

• Authorities later recovered 89 weapons from the yard.

• The incident became one of the bloodiest California prison riots in decades.

• A later investigation determined that the fatal shooting of inmate Miguel Sanchez by a correctional officer was justified after Sanchez was seen stabbing another black inmate.

You’re right. He says some things that are partially true. I own most of his books, and he does share a lot of accurate scholarly information. In fact, many evangelicals would affirm much of the information he presents while rejecting the conclusions he draws from it.

That’s what makes it fascinating to me to compare his writings with those of scholars like Craig Blomberg, Daniel Wallace, and others in the same academic circle. They acknowledge much of the same historical and scholarly evidence yet arrive at very different conclusions.
