Energypathways #EPP welcomes the Government’s interim response on Gas System in Transition.
The response signals a de-risking of the policy case for gas storage and reinforces the fundamental premise that the UK’s transition away from North Sea gas does not eliminate the need for gas storage. In fact, it increases the need for highly deliverable, flexible storage capacity to support a secure and reliable energy system through the transition, while helping to cushion our electricity bills from future global energy price hikes.
MESH, the fully integrated long-duration energy storage (LDES) facility to be built in the Irish Sea, sits at the intersection of the UK’s future energy security, affordability and decarbonisation objectives. By integrating compressed air, natural gas and hydrogen storage, MESH is positioned to play a pivotal role in the UK's energy transition and is designed to capture and store surplus renewable energy and make it available when it is needed most.
If the Government’s forthcoming full response establishes a policy framework to support investment in strategic energy storage, including gas storage, then MESH could be exceptionally well positioned to become a nationally significant strategic energy infrastructure asset.
In short, the Government is increasingly recognising the exact energy-system challenges that MESH has been designed to solve.

Last night, Michelle Scrogham MP hosted a dinner in the House of Commons on behalf of EnergyPathways plc on Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) and the UK's energy security and transition.
Ben Clube, CEO of EnergyPathways, explained our proposed MESH LDES project in the Irish Sea — an integrated compressed air, hydrogen and gas storage scheme with fast response flexibility, multi-day storage and the ability to reduce energy system costs. MESH is set to be the UK's largest LDES project, offering wide ranging benefits to the UK’s future energy system and to the Barrow/Cumbria economy.
Siemens Energy set out why they see MESH as a significant project and its importance for the UK’s energy future, before a wide ranging discussion about the LDES technology landscape, the UK’s policy landscape and the market mechanisms needed to achieve its Clean Power 2030 ambitions and beyond, as well as the potential positive impacts to harness regional jobs and skills.
The Government has designated MESH as a ‘project of national significance’, and it is increasingly deemed a flagship UK energy security project, but some clear asks emerged: accelerate the cap and floor scheme with a rolling investment pipeline, and fix grid and planning bottlenecks specifically for LDES.
Thanks to Michelle Scrogham MP for hosting, and to Lord Alan Whitehead, Lord Walney (John Woodcock), Sir Nic Dakin MP and Team Barrow’s Peter Anstiss, who joined for such a constructive discussion.
Thank you also to our partners Siemens Energy, Jacobs, Costain, Baringa, Zenith Energy and Burness Paull for their expert input.

EnergyPathways #EPP has filed patent applications for its innovative zero-emissions thermal storage technology developed in-house to enhance our modular and scalable Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) system.
The technology is designed to capture and store thermal energy generated during air compression in sub-surface salt caverns, improving CAES round-trip efficiency to as much as 72%, while reducing natural gas consumption, emissions and the cost of conventional thermal storage equipment.
This represents an important step in strengthening the technology and intellectual property the Company has developed with its MESH energy storage system. MESH is set to be the UK’s largest long-duration energy storage (LDES) project at 300MW / 55GWh / 100+ hour, and is designed to lower Britain's energy costs and strengthen energy security by storing renewable energy at scale for when it is needed most.
Importantly, the opportunity to deploy MESH technology extends beyond our initial MESH project.
Our modular system has the potential to be applied across multiple locations in the UK and globally, creating a pathway to near-term, recurring licensing and royalty revenues from our unique technology.
With the UK targeting at least 20GW of LDES and Ultra-LDES, we see significant potential to replicate MESH technology and its integrated energy storage approach.

EnergyPathways #EPP is pleased to announce a collaboration agreement with Finland’s Hycamite to evaluate its proven methane-splitting and carbon processing technology for our planned hydrogen and high-grade graphite production plant at Barrow-in-Furness.
The proposed plant represents a significant potential new commercial opportunity for MESH.
EnergyPathways plans to develop capacity for 20,000 tonnes of hydrogen and c.60,000 tonnes of graphite annually at ABP’s Port of Barrow.
Initial Company scoping economics indicate potential annual revenues of £90m–£120m, with indicative EBITDA margins of 30–40%, from the sale of 20,000 tonnes of hydrogen and 20,000 tonnes of high-grade graphite. A further £20m–£30m of potential revenue upside from lower-grade and residual graphite fines has not been included in these initial economics.
The plant could also create another important value stream for MESH through the production of ammonia for the global fertiliser market.
Graphite has been identified by the UK Government as a critical growth mineral, with applications across EV batteries, aerospace, defence and advanced manufacturing. EnergyPathways intends to apply to the Government’s Critical Minerals Accelerator programme to support its plans.
Alongside our existing work with KBR and Hazer Group, the Hycamite agreement advances our strategy to develop MESH beyond long-duration energy storage into an integrated energy and critical minerals platform with multiple potential revenue streams.

This morning, EnergyPathways #EPP CEO Ben Clube presented the company's MESH Energy Storage Project at the Investor Summit in London, alongside Stephen Kelly and Donald Leggatt.
The MESH Long Duration Energy Storage project, designated as a project of national significance by the UK Government, combines compressed air energy storage with gas-to-hydrogen storage. It is set to become the UK's largest LDES project at 300MW / 55 GWh / 100+ hours.
Critically, MESH offers multi-day storage capability in excess of 100+hours and so will be able to capture the UK's fast-growing surplus wind power which is being generated and then wasted.
Last year the cost to consumers of switching off wind farms and replacing this with gas power was £1.5 billion. By 2030, this is expected to increase to £8+ billion as wind surpluses mount. Other storage technologies, such as batteries, only store for a few hours and are not equipped to handle multi-day wind surplus and deficit events typical of UK weather.
MESH's low-cost hydrogen production will further enhance the MESH capability to store and supply low-carbon dispatchable power for days to weeks and even seasons, significantly strengthening national energy security and the UK grid's resilience and reliability while also reducing emissions.
By mitigating the huge waste in wind power, MESH will help lower electricity prices and reduce the UK's reliance on gas-fired power for backup.

This summer’s heatwave highlighted a growing challenge for Britain’s energy system: managing renewable intermittency over days, not just hours.
As renewable generation grows and disruption to international energy supplies persists, Britain needs more domestic flexibility and long-duration energy storage capabilities — rather than relying on imported energy to balance the grid and keep the lights on.
#EPP's MESH is designed for exactly this challenge: 300MW / 55GWh / 100+ hours of storage, capturing surplus energy when it’s abundant and releasing it when Britain needs it most.
MESH will provide unprecedented system flexibility from seconds to seasons — lowering system costs, adding grid stability and strengthening national energy security.

His Majesty King Charles’ visit to Great British Energy’s new headquarters in Aberdeen is an important vote of confidence in the city and the extraordinary depth of engineering expertise built there over decades.
Aberdeen’s capabilities have been forged through the North Sea oil and gas industry and are now increasingly being applied to the technologies and infrastructure that will drive the UK’s energy transition.
It is precisely why EnergyPathways #EPP is establishing its headquarters in Aberdeen — to harness the region’s deep engineering experience, technical capability and world-class supply chain as we advance MESH and our wider UK project ambitions.
Britain’s energy transition should build on the skills and expertise developed in the North Sea, not leave them behind.
Aberdeen has a major role to play in the next chapter of UK energy.
For investors in the region, a reminder that EnergyPathways will be in Aberdeen tomorrow, 24 September, at 18:30 for our Investor Roadshow at Maryculter House, where we look forward to discussing MESH, our recent progress and the opportunities ahead.

#EPP As highlighted in this Channel 4 News clip, the challenges facing the UK energy system are clear.
With UK gas storage capacity a fraction of that across much of Europe, our energy system and economy remain exposed to global price volatility and supply disruption.
Developing long-duration energy storage at scale is critical to both energy security and the UK’s clean energy transition, alongside domestic gas storage.
Greater storage capacity can deliver significant benefits:
- Lower energy costs for households and businesses
- Support Britain’s reindustrialisation
- Reduce reliance on expensive “just-in-time” gas imports
- Harness British jobs, skills and supply chains
- Strengthen national energy security
At EnergyPathways, we recognise the urgency of this challenge and are accelerating our MESH project accordingly.
MESH is designed to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the UK energy system.
Our objective is simple: accelerate MESH towards operation to deliver lower energy costs, strengthen national energy security, and support British jobs, skills, and growth.

EnergyPathways #EPP is delighted to announce it is to be awarded a Gas Storage License (GSL) by the North Sea Transition Authority for its flagship MESH project located in the East Irish Sea and onshore in Barrow-in-Furness.
This decision marks a major milestone in the development of the wider MESH project, with the GSL spanning a substantial offshore area that could support up to 60 large-scale salt storage caverns with potential for multi terawatt-hour scale energy storage and is expected to be Britain’s largest integrated energy storage facility.
The planned MESH Project has already been designated by the UK Government as a project of “national significance” and will comprise compressed air energy storage (CAES), natural gas storage transitioning to hydrogen storage and complementary hydrogen production for clean power and sustainable industry uses.
EnergyPathways plans the following:
· A natural gas storage facility that will double Britain’s meagre gas storage capacity and provide up to 6 days of national energy supply, securing Britain’s energy future and reducing its over-dependence on expensive gas imports.
· CAES storage of 300 MW / 55 GWh capacity, which is expected to be Britain’s largest LDES facility. This will provide game-changing “days not hours” of electrical storage, essential to harness the billions of pounds of wind power currently being wasted and passed on to consumer bills;
· Low-carbon dispatchable power generation that will be far cheaper than the expensive gas-fired power upon which Britain relies and which sets the power prices for all of Britain’s electricity, including renewables;
· Low-cost hydrogen production capability that will be used to further decarbonise MESH dispatchable power and new sustainable industries planned in Barrow-in-Furness, including EnergyPathways’ proposed graphite production plant; and
· A project that delivers homegrown energy and requires little or no government support at no added cost to consumer bills.
EnergyPathways, along with its Tier One partners, including Siemens Energy, Costain plc, Wood plc and Zenith Energy will now progress the MESH project to a Final Investment Decision in 2028 and start up by late 2031. The Company has already initiated several funding and capacity offtake discussions.
EnergyPathways CEO, Ben Clube said:
“I am delighted that we have met the NSTA’s criteria to offer EnergyPathways this crucial Gas Storage Licence, one of only two NSTA energy licence awards in the last two years.
“The UK Government recognises MESH and other forms of long-duration energy storage as having a vital role in lowering energy prices, bolstering energy security and achieving a clean energy system."

Still getting my head around the curveball #EPP news. Also seeing what funds can be pulled together for the retail offer.
What is clear is that:
- The bullish statement from the Party conference and recent government liaisons indicates the government has offered major support for MESH, but greater support comes with greater expectation, so now the company need to get their arses in gear and deliver milestones promptly, hence the raise.
- There was still most of the ATM facility left undrawn, so this may well indicate that this new raise will render the ATM redundant (despite it being a decent facility, this will be welcomed by investors)
- This funding is bridging the gap to government, grant and private sector finance… The milestones to be hit seem urgent so hopefully this means the time until the big players weigh in will be short.
- The trading halt will ensure no more selling occurs and the retail offer allows retail investors and existing holders a chance to come in on the same terms as the institutional parties. However, the trading halt should have been implemented much sooner.
What we need answers to:
- Terms of the raise: price, amount etc
- What the urgent milestones that need to be achieved are.
- Bridging finance timeframe
- Who the institutional investors are (TR1’s etc)
I’ve been in EPP for nearly two years… and as I said earlier, maybe two years too early. But with the gas storage license and section 35 in place and with today’s developments, it would seem that we are finally getting to the point where major material progress is going to happen.
Onwards and upwards
