Nigeria's former Director of Defence Information, Major-General Rabe Abubakar (Rtd), has died while in the custody of bandits after weeks in captivity.
The Katsina State Government confirmed the development in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Muazu, saying the retired senior military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors.
The retired Major-General was travelling to Katsina on Saturday, May 30, 2026 alongside his wife, Amina Abubakar, and their driver, Abdullahi Saโidu, when their vehicle was ambushed along the Marabar MusawaโKafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area.
Days before his death, a video circulated online showing the retired Army General appealing to authorities to meet the demands of his captors to secure his release.
According to the state government, extensive efforts by security agencies and the Katsina State Government to secure his freedom were unsuccessful.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the incident as a tragic loss to the family, Katsina State, and the nation, noting that the development highlights the urgent need for stronger collaboration in addressing insecurity.
The state government reiterated its commitment to working with federal authorities and security agencies to bring those responsible to justice and sustain ongoing efforts to combat banditry across the state.

Englandโs World Cup preparations have suffered an unexpected setback after several match boots and training items were reportedly stolen ahead of the teamโs first training session in Kansas City, USA.
The theft is said to have occurred while equipment was being transported from Englandโs pre-tournament base in Florida to their training camp at Swope Soccer Village, Missouri. Missing items reportedly include boots belonging to several England stars, official tournament balls, and other training gear.
Kansas City police have launched an investigation and confirmed that two suspects have been taken into custody.
> โTwo subjects of interest were taken into custody pending further investigation,โ a police spokesperson told The Guardian.
Despite the incident, manager Thomas Tuchel and his squad are still scheduled to hold their first training session in Kansas City on Saturday. The Football Association has declined to comment publicly but is expected to work closely with local authorities to recover the stolen equipment.
The incident comes just days before Englandโs opening Group L clash against Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday, creating an unwelcome distraction for a side hoping to end a 60-year wait for major international silverware.

As a man,
Never beg
Never chase
Never appear needy
Never take disrespect
Whether it's business, society ,friends or girlfriend.
If you appear needy and desperate...
You are nothing as a man.
Just because it's taking time, does not mean that it's not happening.
It's happening, it's just taking longer than you wanted to and if you don't stop, you can't lose.
