Open Hearts and Minds is a project of the Auckland Refugee Council that aims to increase empathy for refugees and people seeking asylum in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Sending our wishes for a blessed and happy #Matariki to our Māori friends and supporters! 🌟💙 Sending our solidarity to our indigenous friends around the world who continue to protect their culture in times of forced assimilation and persecution.
#UNHCR has deployed staff to the most affected areas to assess the needs on the ground and is rushing supplies to assist the affected people, working with other humanitarian partners. Please help if you can - https://t.co/R0kg6xbfik
I’m so proud to be Māori right now.
It hits different realising that our culture and beliefs that were almost lost forever are being revitalised and finally getting the attention and recognition they deserve.

What is a learning experience you'll never forget? 🌏 Vikashni's experience volunteering in refugee resettlement motivated her to start her journey as a refugee rights academic! 🌺
Vikashni's PhD research focuses on the lived experiences of refugees in the workplace. Her passion is for people to understand the human stories of refugees, not just the societal barriers they face.
Vikashni's multicultural childhood in Fiji taught her to be open to different cultures, a value she has kept all her life, including in her past career in aviation before starting her academic journey.
Looking forward to tomorrow's korero on a safe start for asylum seekers & a fair future for all refugees in #Aotearoa with May Eqbal (@Asylum_Trust_nz) Solomon Samson @golrizghahraman, @IbrahimomerNZ & @jay_marlowe
