For over a month, the federal government has been in a historic shutdown and the Internal Revenue Service is still collecting every dime. E-filing works. Direct deposits flow. Penalties accrue. Interest compounds.

But walk-in centers? Closed. Phone lines? Silent. Audits? Paused. Refunds? Delayed.

Half the IRS workforce 40,000+ employees sits at home on furlough. And yet, the tax machine hums along without missing a beat.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬.
𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

From a conservative standpoint, the 2025 government shutdown isn’t breaking the IRS it’s exposing it as one of the most bloated, wasteful, and constitutionally suspect agencies in Washington. And it’s time we finish the job.

1. 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟, 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐭

Before the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) began its work, the IRS employed over 90,000 people more than the population of some congressional districts. The average IRS worker pulls in $80,000+ with federal benefits that would make a private-sector CEO blush.

Now? Nearly half are furloughed.
And guess what? The system still works.

Electronic payments? Processed.
E-filed returns? Accepted.
Penalties and interest? Still piling up.

If the IRS can run on 50% capacity, why were the other 40,000 ever hired?

This isn’t efficiency it’s empire protection. The IRS isn’t a revenue service; it’s a jobs program for bureaucrats and the shutdown just pulled back the curtain.

2. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐈𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐎𝐁𝐁𝐁𝐀 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) — signed into law on July 4, 2025 — delivers the largest conservative tax victory in a generation:
- Permanent TCJA rates
- No tax on tips or overtime
- $6,000 senior deduction
- SALT cap raised to $40,000

Simple. Fair. Pro-growth.

But the IRS? Dragging its feet.
Blaming the shutdown.
Demanding more funding to “update systems.”

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲.

The IRS thrives on confusion. The more forms, the more rules, the more fear the more power they wield. OBBBA’s simplicity is a direct threat to their existence. That’s why they’re slow-walking implementation while crying poverty.

𝟑. 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩, 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐓𝐚𝐱𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Let’s be clear about the double standard:

This isn’t public service.
This is extortion with a government seal.

The IRS can ruin your life with a single letter but when they shut down, you still owe. That’s not law enforcement. That’s legalized theft.

While the IRS plays victim, the free market is stepping up:
- TurboTax processes returns in 20 minutes.
- H&R Block offers walk-in help nationwide.
- CPAs answer questions the IRS won’t.

And EFTPS? It runs itself.

If Intuit can do it faster, cheaper, and friendlier why do we need 90,000 IRS agents?

The answer: We don’t.

Conservatives have been saying it for decades: Starve the beast.

The 2025 shutdown is proof of concept.
DOGE already cut 25,000 IRS jobs.
Now? Make it permanent.

Demand in any shutdown-ending bill:
- Cap IRS funding at 50% of 2024 levels
- Ban rehiring furloughed staff
- Sunset 75% of IRS divisions by 2027
And in 2026?
Introduce the Flat Tax Act one rate, one page, no IRS required.
